With his return to victorious footing, Capt Vogel gathers his elite rifle platoon and supplements his men with Cpl Winkler’s rifle platoon. With his 2 pioneer squads in reserve he hopes to exploit any break he can make in the Russian lines and continue to make his way up to the top of Mamayev Kurgan.

Capt Melekhov is angry. His superiors almost took him out to be shot! They had all thought that with the number of reinforcements and the high morale after their initial victory that it would be easy to push the Germans back. Those paper pushers on the hilltop have no idea of the tenacity of the German soldier!!! Now he must stop the Germans. He tasks Cpl Bulganin to hold the right flank while he will hold the left. His pioneer platoon(flamethrower) in reserve will give him the firepower to stop the Germans in their tracks!!

Objectives:
Russian: W Exit Points double VP
Open: T All Obj = 2 VP
German: M Obj 5 = 3 VP



Capt Vogel sets up with his platoon in the center of the battlefield in the gully. As in the first attempt to take this wretched ground, the trees in the middle of the field are his objective. Command has stated he needs to get past this hilly terrain and up the hill(Objective W). Winkler positions himself and his 3 squads on the German right within gully. Pioneer squads with flamethrower and LMG wait in reserve to exploit breakthroughs. .

Capt Melekhov sets up with his platoon on the Russian left. Cpl Bulganin sets up on the Russian right flank. They await Cpl Krylov and an assault squad which are close behind the lines.

Vogel has been here before. He decides to employ the same strategy and try to make it into the central woods and then hold off the Russians until his reserves arrive. Vogel makes it to the woods with his 3 squads. 2 break from op fire but are quickly recovered.
Melekhov counters by moving into the woods along his left flank and digging in on the ridge. Trading fire with Vogel’s squads is ineffective. Krylov arrives with the assault squad(flamethrower) behind the Russian left flank. Bulganin attempts to move down the ridge on the Russian right and into the rubble. Op fire breaks 2 of his squads and himself. He subsequently is eliminated by LMG fire. 1 of the squads is eliminated by a sniper. The Russian right is now in deep trouble.

Vogel repositions his men to allow fields of fire to the center and right and a pioneer squad(flamethrower) moves forward on the German left flank to cover any Russian movement down this section. A Russian squad with Molotov cocktail makes it to the rubble near Vogel’s position as another makes it up the ridge on the other side of the woods from Vogel. The pioneer squad(flamethrower) moves up the ridge and into the woods by Vogel and digs in. The Russian squad heroically launches itself into the face of the German flamethrower and both sides are eliminated due to Ambushes. Krylov and Assault squad(flamethrower) move toward gully on the Russian left. Vogel orders 1 of his Elite Rifle squads into melee with Russians in adjacent rubble and wins. This squad then makes its way across the battlefield from rubble to rubble to make it further up the hill.
A Russian squad makes it into the brush on the German left and eventually off board.

With a relative stalemate on the German right, Vogel decides to push through the Russian left and make it further up the hill. Negotiating the rubble on the field, he and a squad make it up the hill. The Russians, realizing the game is getting out of hand move into the gully on their left flank. At Turn 6 of 6, there is no sudden death and Vogel returns to the battle to reinforce Winkler on the German right. The Russians delay hoping for the right time to ambush the Germans. However, the Germans realizing the Russians are in trouble goad them to battle. German maneuvering enables a rifle squad to advance on a Russian rifle squad in the gully. Again, ambushes eliminate the Germans and Russians.

The Russians realize it is better to strategically withdraw and the game ends with German win VP 16.



On to game 4...
As this last battle was again Recon, the battle moves to R1 Map 32. The German winner downgrades the Russians to Line.

Germans have 1 pioneer squad(LMG) and Cpl Winkler for reinforcements in battle 4.
Russians have 2 guards rifle squads as reinforcements.

Germans call for Divisional Reserves but none are available.
Russians call for Divisional Reserves and Sgt Kovalev with Guards Rifle platoon.
