AAGH! YOU'RE TOUCHING ME!

It has occurred to me recently when giving yet another thumb to one of them that, perhaps, I'm becoming one of the curmudgeon club. I'm not going to names names, but I think we can all guess who they are.

Am I imagining my slide into crankiness or is it real? If so, can it be stopped?

I'll give you an example. I used to pride myself on not caring what the bits in a game looked like as long as they worked. So when I played Wabash Cannonball I was just fine with the bland map and little wooden cubes. I want to buy it, so I check out it's re-branded entry under Chicago Express and look at the Queen version and I found myself annoyed at the higher production values. I just want the plain old version I first played.

What the hell??

When green is all there is to be, it could make you wonder why. But why wonder? I'm green, and it'll do fine: it's beautiful, and I think it's what I want to be.

I think it has something to do with your bits getting older.

Aye.. I had a similar feeling with Keltis... I was annoyed that it was released stateside as Lost Cities: The Board Game. I would've preferred the really green board.

Sorry, curmudgeoness cannot be stopped once you have started down that slippery slope. Just ask my wife. So just give into the dark side and embrace your crankiness.

Now, get off my lawn!

Maybe you're Game Stupid. I'm on the other end of that spectrum of now wanting to sleeve cards, upgrade bits, and even make "better" home made versions of games I paid good money for.

Yep, that's it; we're both idiots.

For me, it depends on the game. Wabash was one of the first games that I was aghast at the crap components. I understand, you are paying for the rules/development, but golly WC sucked. It is like they didn't even try.

I will admit, more often than not, plastic pieces annoy me. I like my wooden cubes.

Winsome aesthetics are, um, minimalistic to be sure. But when game play shines like it does in Wabash et. al., in the Winsome line, I get over it.

Alright, alright, I'll tell the Origins story but I have to think about it some of the details are foggy.

To sate you until I can write it up, it involves:

* animal husbandry of the Indiana variety by the side of the road
* a "shower incident"
* being forced to get up much earlier than normal
and
* CF blows a casket
* a Navia Dratp promo

Good times, good times.

Hey, you spelled curmudgeon properly. That puts you in the distinct minority of Chit Chatters who like to blather endlessly about them.

Should "Chit Chatters" really be capitalized here?

I suspect that if you bought Chicago Express, you would have no problem trading it for Wabash Cannonball. In fact, I could hook you up with someone who would gladly make that trade.

There appears to be a list of people who would make a similar trade. --http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/360546

I like my cardboard counters. Does that make me a curmudgeon or just a grognard? What are the early signs of curmudgeonenia? What are the advanced signs?
