I thought I would share these home grown dice towers (as yet to be used in a real game).

My son's grades were not up to snuff this weekend, so he is unable to play video games (I know, I'm an evil Dad). He's a creative sort, as most children left to themselves tend to be, so he pulled out the craft supplies.

The previous weekend was the same (low grades) with the same result (craft supplies). However last weekend involved multiple kids (not just my own). My wife ended up traveling to the dollar store to load up on popsicle sticks and the result was a massive popsicle-stick fort. A strange cross between medieval and western in the perfect scale for their Star Wars figurines. :-)

Last night, after building a drawbridge for his Matchbox cars, Henry decided to try his hand at a dice tower. This was with no suggesting or prodding from me, honest! With some help from another friend they created two beautifully crazy contraptions.

The first doesn't function quite as well as the second. With the second they threw dice down the shoots countless times to "improve" the functionality. I love how the multiple strands of stretched glue from the glue guns gives it an even more haphazard look that it already has.

Here is their first tower:

And here is the second:

They sort of look like what would result if Frank Lloyd Wright designed a wooden roller coaster.

When we were kids, our favourite toys were:
- dominos
- marbles
- Lego
- carton tubes
- folders
- tape
- popsicle sticks
and anything else we could craft into courses for the top two items to traverse.

Your dice towers are awesome.

Fantastic! Be careful it sound like you are rewarding them for bad grades! Maybe next week take away the sticks if the grades are too low!

Henry, great work! Now Emily and Jacob want to make THEIR own dice towers, too!

Can't wait to see them in person the next time we're down!

Sometimes positive reinforcement is a better solution than punishment (which is not to be confused with negative reinforcement).

Impressive! The only problem with this is that--unless you're one of those crazy Californians who keep taunting us all on the weather geeklist--it's WAY the hell too cold to eat that many popsicles!

I think those kids are channeling Escher. I get this crazy dizziness when I look at the photos and have trouble telling which parts are above which other parts!

But it's great. Personally, I'd be tempted to take away their computers from now on, no matter what their grades are; building those towers looks like a better use for time than playing Halo to me...but then I'm an evil dad too. devil

I've been buying up cheap Legos for when my son gets older. I just bought an 80.00 set for 8.00 last week and I found two of the Spielberg Studio sets for $2.00 at an auction (long story) last summer.

I wonder if I've collected enough pieces to do that...

These are great! They kind of remind me of the water rides at Cedar Point.
