I have a question about Preliminary Encounters when playing the area tree variation. The rules state:

Each time you want to go up or down a level, draw a Preliminary Encounter card.

What about for the first encounter of the game, when you are going from "off the tree" to a level one area? Also, if you are defeated in a combat and are forced "off the tree," do you draw a Preliminary Encounter card when you next move to a level one area?

Thanks very much for any help you guys can give.

Kevin

To my understanding, you potentially face a level 1 Preliminary Encounter whenever you travel to a level 1 location, whether from a higher level on the tree or from "off the board". I think of the Preliminary Encounter as being located on the road into that location, common for whatever path is used to approach that location.

Yup, basically not being on the Tree at all counts as being on Level Zero, so moving to level One you need to draw a preliminary encounter. If you didn't do it this way you would hardly ever encounter any level 1 preliminary encounters, which would effectively break the functionality of a couple of the cards (such as level 1 cards which have special abilities as the preliminary encounter eg. the Lancer in Archangel).

For a slightly dorkier way of looking at it, I treat the Tree Structure as follows:

Level 3 [][][][][]
Level 2 [][][][][]
Level 1 [][][][][]
Level 0 ----------
