If you've been following the epic struggle against the nine-year-old boardgamegeek code base over the last several months, you are aware that we're going to be implementing the first round of major code changes that herald the coming of rpggeek.com and potentially other iterations of the fine 'Geek software that we've come to know and love.

Well, this Sunday, Super Bowl Sunday for those of you playing at home, is the day we've selected. Boardgamegeek.com will be down from noonish on Sunday until an undisclosed time on (hopefully) Monday. Now for those of you who know databases, we're essentially doing a massive conversion of all the internal database pointers to facilitate the next phase of development toward the goal. For those of you who don't know databases, reconstructing the database fully can take upwards of twelve hours to complete, so use your imagination. ninja

So please bear with us. I promise that in the long run, this momentary lapse in service will allow us to give you a better overall boardgamegeek product.

Per usual, you can seek solace in the BGGDown Google group until we come back. Sometimes with software you have to take a step backwards in order to start sprinting forward... And no one wants this to last any longer than it has to.

I've got a much simpler and quicker solution for the database conversion:

The most boring Super Bowl matchup in years and you are going to take my beloved BGG from me as well?

Why bother even getting out of bed on Sunday...

I had a guide, a Bedouin man, who called me 'Abu el Banat'. And whenever we'd meet another Bedouin, he'd introduce me as Abu el Banat. And the Bedouin would laugh and laugh and offer me a Pint of beer. (cont below)

And I'd go to pay them for the beer and they wouldn't let me. "Abu el Banat" means "father of daughters." They thought the beer was the least they could do.

The SIX hours of pre game and Madden babbling, the team that scores the most points is going to win the game, starts at noon. That should keep any true NFL/BGG fan distracted.

LMAO!

Really? Do you think we can hear more about Warner's Cinderella story and Polamalu's hair? That would definitely make me forget about BGG being down!!!

Thank you, Derk (and Aldie, and Dan). I hope all goes well with the conversion effort, and I look forward to the new-and-improved 'geek.

I suggest that the rest of us arrange to do something else that day -- maybe play some games?

I hope I don't lose my voice with all that primal screaming all have to do to replace BGG.

At least you decided to do it on a weekend instead of during working hours to avoid peak use.

Thank god the Swedish transmission only starts at 23:55 CET (17:55 EST) so we only have to sit (or in my case lie) through a few minutes (read: half an hour) of inane babbling from the Swedish commentators before the game actually starts.

Duh. Obviously Derk and Aldie are starting the process early, checking it's running, and then sloping off to watch the big match whilst it runs for hours. The SB ends, they haul their asses back to the server room and see if it has worked.

It's what I'd do anyway.

What's the other goodness you're considering Derk? A rival to imdb?

In that case, the pregame show is an ideal time to sit down and play Pizza Box Football. And why not use the teams in the real thing? http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/373903

Nah, I don't think they're going to be in the server room at all. It's called PuTTy and it's really handy!
