Fire & Ice is an annual convention being held in Manitowoc, WI on February 28th and March 1st this year: http://www.fireandiceconvention.com/

This is a math trade where the exchange will be made at the convention on Saturday, February 28th at 1pm (during a break in the event schedule).

You do not need to be going to the convention to participate, although that is strongly encouraged. You can also participate if you can find someone in your area who is willing to be your proxy at the convention (i.e. someone who is willing to take your traded games to the convention and pick up your "winnings" for you).

Usually finding a proxy isn't that hard - we've had several no-ship events that have drawn participants from WI and N. Illinois, and those didn't even have the convention as a draw.

So here are some details about the math trade:

The Online Want List Generator is not available for the event due to a problem with the XML API caused by the recent upgrades to this site.

Open for posting games: Saturday, February 7th (10am) until Friday, February 13th (10pm)

I will post the official summary in this discussion thread shortly thereafter.

Want list submission period: Friday, February 13th (10pm) until Monday, February 16th (10pm)

Want lists and initial results will be posted here about an hour thereafter. Please try to check your BGG mail after you submit your lists - if you make formatting errors, I might need to send your lists back to you, to ask you to fix the formatting errors.

Results declared final: Tuesday, February 17th (noon).

Software Used: TradeMaximizer 1.4 with duplicate protection. SEED=1234567, ITERATIONS=100, METRIC=USERS-TRADING

I have chosen the USERS-TRADING metric because it potentially increases the number of people taking part who make at least one trade, while not affecting the overall number of trades. This means that for this particular event, the order of the items on your want lists makes NO difference.

You will find the trade GeekList, along with the rules and helpful instructions about creating your want lists, here:

Here is the official summary:

http://home.earthlink.net/~anglotiger/FI_summary.txt

Please remember that only the part before the "==>" is the official code for an entry. The rest is just to help you. You can submit any time now, but I'd recommend checking against the geeklist to see condition and sweeteners if you don't remember.

Want lists are here:

Cutting and pasting them here is so ugly.

Results are now final.

http://bgg.activityclub.org/olwlg/39330-results-summary.html

I can't seem to fix the one error, but it's for an item that had a blank wantlist and doesn't affect the results.

94 trades total. We lost one when someone blanked a want list with 4 minutes to go. Sorry Colleen - you lost the trade, but it also changed a lot of other trades (grrr)

No. I've created the list but I haven't opened it up for submissions yet. As the creator, I get to add my items early (quite a time saver) and as we're using "USERS-TRADING" as the metric, there's no question of me having an advantage by posting ahead of time, because the order you put items on your want lists doesn't matter at all to the final results - the TradeMaximizer assumes you have no preference and will happily accept anything on your want list.

No problem Brent. It'll be nice to see you there.

I've opened it up early - I feel like sleeping in tomorrow. So have at it!

A good start for a local event.

Items from as far afield as N. Illinois.

Jack, can you explain how we will trade the games at Fire and Ice? I will be there all weekend, so perhaps I can assist somehow. I was imagining that Karl would reserve a table for this math trade and people can drop off and pick up there.

I have never done a math trade before. I have never been to Fire & Ice before.

I guess I would like to try to participate, but I am finding this all very intimidating in terms of complexity and detail. Is there any way you could summarize or simplify what it takes to participate?

That's a good question Colleen.

The details haven't been ironed out yet but I think that's the idea. I'll talk to Karl and let you know here (or Karl, you could comment yourself here). I can tell you that the timing for the exchange was planned to be during a break between events.

I suppose I should try to be specific.

Suppose there are games I'd like to get that I don't see on geeklist but I suspect people are likely to have; is there a way to publish a wantlist to encourage people to list things?

Hi Eric,

Well you've seen the discussion thread in the Milwaukee Guild, so you know the basic concept.

Simply put:

a) You enter your items (using the "Add Item") link in the trade GeekList - see the link provided above. Be sure to inventory the components if the game isn't in the original shrink, and describe the condition, language edition etc as appropriate (use existing entries as a guideline).

b) Look at everyone else's entries and decide what you would take in exchange for each of your entries. Remember that you can't combine two separate entries, so if you decide that you would take entry 19 and 20 for one of your entries, they cannot be combined. Each numbered entry in the Geeklist is entirely separate.

c) At the end of the game submission period, on Friday night, I will publish here (above) the Official Summary. This is a set of alphanumeric codes that you must use to create your want lists - the lists of things you would accept for each of your entries. That process is laid out in detail in the instructions. It's really the only complicated part of this, and it sounds more complicated than it actually is.

d) You have until Monday night to send me your want lists. It is important that you follow the instructions and use the official codes in the summary that I provide, because otherwise I can't run it through the software that determines the trades.

If you decide that you don't want to trade something you've listed, you can just send in a blank want list for that item. So for example, say you offer Power Grid (and the code is, let's say, 234-PGRID) but don't see anything you'd swap it for. Your list would look like:

(cosine) 234-PGRID:

Having nothing after the colon ensures you don't trade this item.

e) After the deadline for want lists passes, I combine everyone's provided want lists and the official summary and run them through the trade software, which determines the largest number of trades and returns the results.

Does that help at all?

Ah, there is often a "request geeklist" for just that purpose. We're not using one here because of the small number of participants. But feel free to make requests here in the discussion thread.

Re: Fire & Ice Con (Manitowoc, WI) no-ship math trade discussion thread
A request then;

I am very interested in collectible trading card games. If you have a stash of something in you closet, please consider adding it to the list. I have no need for any inventory of the cards. Just a general description of what you have is all that's needed - a total count, about how many from what expansions, how much trading have you done, wear and condition. Thanks for taking time to consider these additions.

It is also worth considering adding any miniatures you might have in a shoebox in the basement. Especially if they are for popular games such as Warhammer. Mention condition is important here.

I'm planning for the exchange to happen at 1pm, which is the first break period on Saturday. There are some other things happening at this time, but it shouldn't take more than a couple of minutes to run out to the car, drop games off at the assigned table(s), go watch the costume contest and foam sword tournament, and then pick up your games after all that is done. Or you can just ignore all of those distractions.

I'll have an exact table location for the trade by the end of the week.

If anyone from the Madison area will be attending the math trade in person, and if you wouldn't mind in helping a potential math trade to/from me (taking/picking up games @ F&I and somewhere in/around Madison), please reply or PM me.

I will hold off listing games into the Trade list until I know that it is feasible to make a trade happen.

Thanks.

Eric:

Glad to hear you are coming to Fire & Ice. I'd like to support your request for CCGs. I have a lot of different ones that I'd like to trade off. I usually do not list them on BGG because they don't do very well.

What are you looking for? I have the following to offer:

Magic the Gathering, Legend of Five Rings, Highlander, Star Wars, and a little Vampire.

I don't know about Eric, but I wouldn't mind seeing some Legend of Five Rings stuff.

On a related note, if anyone wants to list Gheos, I wouln't be opposed to it either.
