A few weeks ago, I posted a thread in Chit Chat about 'contradictory microbadges'. In the OP, I wrote:
And then there are borderline cases, that are not really 'contradictory', but just a slight mismatch, a glitch, an oversight, or whatever one would like to call it. An example could be: - - GeekGold Tipper
To which I later added:
Actually, this one may be more 'contradictory' than I thought. Several of its owners have not tipped even a single GG and several others have tipped very few. Two of the biggest tippers, Derk and Pete Belli both have the badge though, but several other big tippers, such as Grognads, do not.
Following up on that, and rather than doing something useful (like finishing the paper I'm working on), I tried to find out today who the site's biggest tippers are, and how many of them actually own the geekgold tipper microbadge. In total, that badge has 21 owners. That was easy to find out. Finding the big tippers was difficult, except for a few obvious ones, and I'm pretty sure that there are some names missing in the list below. Cutoff point to be mentioned in the table below is a minimum of 250 GG spent on tips. ('Gifts' are not included.)
About the column headers: tips = tips given - GG spent on tips (rounded); ratio = tipping ratio - tips given divided by tips received; deficit = tipping deficit - tips given minus tips received; %in - percentage of GG 'collected' spent on tips; %out - percentage of GG 'spent' spent on tips; GGtipMP - marked X if that user owns the geekgold tipper microbadge.

Of the 28 users on this list, 6 own the geekgold tipper microbadge. Of the other 15 owners of that badge, 5 have not spent a single GG on tips. Those are the 'liars', of course. Most of the other 10 users that own the badge are still doing better than average of course. Half of them has spent more than 50 GG on tips.
Of the owners of the geekgold tipper microbadge, pete belli, obviously, is most 'deserving' of that badge. He is the biggest non-admin tipper. Maybe Aldie and Derk, who have access to 'unlimited funds' should be excluded from the list, moving Pete to the top position.
There are quite a few Chit Chat regulars on the list too, but somehow that didn't surprise me at all.
edits: added gwen and kuhrusty; replaced tabs by spaces.
note (3/11): Duchamp should have been in the top half of the list too, but it's too late now to track back his tipping stats at that time. Right now he's just over 600 spent on tips.

Interesting overiew. Even though I meet the lower limit for your analysis, I never got that microbadge (and I also don't intend to get one).
I do wonder though why people bother to get a microbadge for something they have never done. Good resolutions maybe ?

gwen wrote: Even though I meet the lower limit for your analysis, You sure do. I tried to find these users by means of a google search of 'geekstuff' pages. Apparently, Google does not 'look' at all of those. You are the fifth user added to the list later, because Google did not find you. Consequently, the above list is probably highly unreliable and a lot of big tippers are most likely still missing. (My apologies to any big tipper missing from the list.)
gwen wrote: I do wonder though why people bother to get a microbadge for something they have never done. Good resolutions maybe ? Yeah, me too. That's what started to make me wonder about this. (I first noticed by looking at the page for the microbadge owners, because I considered getting that microbadge. I decided against it though: better tip the GG to users who create useful content than spent it on a microbadge.)

Ooh I only need to tip nine GG to move up four places..........done. Recalculate

Good thread. I doubt I would ever buy the tipper MicroBadge. It just seems too much like self-promotion when this whole site is basically one big exercise in narcissism already.

Did you look at how often people tip?
I tip about once a day, on average. I probably tip more than I post (Not counting the 'last post before BGG goes down wins the pot' thread ). I don't have much GG, so I usually tip one cent when I want to give someone more than just a thumbs up. I haven't spent my GG on anything but tips or gifts in five months.
I wouldn't feel completely undeserving of the tipper microbadge, if I had it. Even if I've only tipped 5.35 GG in total (plus 15 in gifts). Some of those microbadge owners might feel the same. If someone enjoys giving tips, I understand if they want to have the microbadge.

I don't have the GG Tipper microbadge; it seems like that 15GG would be better spent as tips, ha ha.

I actually don't think that I tip nearly enough. Some of those tips have been based on contests and other things I've done where the geekgold given wasn't mine to begin with. I need to be more giving with the geekgold I've earned myself.

Well, some of them may get the badge to help their microbadges "spell" something. You know, like when people get the addition and equals signs and come up with some clever little equation?
Who knows? Just my $.02 worth.

You may want to use spaces rather than tabs to make this table - it's not showing at all lined up for me, so it's hard to read.

fixed.

Another fascinating study in why people study less than fascinating things. I'm sure my entry is skewed by the fact that the bulk of the tips I have "received" came from myself when I returned my GeekGold stash from the user I created recently to replace MisterCranky when I tried to delete him. So somewhere around 100GG went out to Interrogative, who bought a badge, and then 85ish were sent back when that plan was scotched. You have Daniel Karp to thank for my continued existence. Although, since he never responded to my request that he give me the badge that Interrogative bought, I still might say to hell with it and proceed with my original plan.

I appreciate this thread. Nice work.
One thing to point out, that "tipping" is not inclusive of giving.
I have chosen to give directly through the link on the person's profile page, to add a note when it has been worth tipping over 5gg, for example.
My total for straight-up tipping is:
174.28 with the most recent given yesterday...
BUT, I have given a total of 204 in large gifts of 10 or more geekgold via the profiles to sponsor avatars for folks or to reward good deeds done or written about.
(FYI: I am not including tipping moderators for Math Trades or JeffyJeff for his OLWLG, or the creator of TradeMax or software used...)
Add that to my total giving and I would easily exceed the 550gg given mark...
So I do write this to say that numbers might not reflect giving. These folks who have the tipper badge might actually give away gg via other avenues. Prob not, but it might be true.
Or maybe they should have the "GG Trippin!" badge instead.

wow! I'd missed this back then, while I have to concur with "diehard4life" that besides the actual "tips", then there is also another factoring "into" the 'mix' with outright "gifts" of as well with obtaining the 'items' from "Geek Auctions", or even CONTESTS from here, in which those then went to yet some other from those of US who'd gotten such, with that.

Indeed, and including those would probably put you at the top of the list. However, extracting that data is even more labor intensive than getting the tipping stats.
