Please tell me it's a randomly determined fluke of evolution that humans of all the animals have nostrils so designed that we cannot escape smelling our own gas, whether standing up, sitting down, or even lying down?

Gas has a lot of random motion. I think we'd smell it no matter which direction our nostrils were pointed, unless we're moving or in the wind.
Would it be worse if our noses were in the backs of our heads?

Also, I remember hearing that our noses evolved with the nostrils pointing downward so that when swimming water does not go straight into them. I think it would be a much larger inconvenience to have our nostrils pointed upwards and have to swim backwards.

The real question about evolution and noses is this:
Why does a bright, diffuse light (such as the sky on a cloudy day) cause a person to sneeze? Or is that just me?

I want flaps so I can cover my nostrils without using fingers. Like camels have. Really, is it so much to ask for?

Does it have to be diffuse? I think looking at the sun causes sneezing.
Maybe to say "You idiot! Quit staring at the sun!"

Can we please stop calling 'The Scientific Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection' just evolution? I know it's short hand but it avoids the point that it is is a scientific theory and not just a vague hunch and the fact that it involves natural selection and not just evolution by chance. Too many people don't know what it is short for and it matters.
ahem.
Thank you. Please continue.

Or is that just me? it's called the photic sneeze reflex and is genetic. perhaps way back in the day it was advantageous for cave dwellers to sneeze when exiting the murky depths to clear their lungs of nasty stuff
