My gamer group of 3 is looking to add a solid wargame to our collection. Unfortunatly most war games seem to really play best with 2, or 4. We're looking something with a modern theme to it so tanks and the like are prefered. We'd prefer something non historical as we are looking for something that really feels like it can freeform to what we want to play instead of being just historical scenarios that really are intended to be played out with a set group of tactics.

Yes we're picky but thats what makes finding this so hard.

Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.

Why not give Battletech Introductory Box Set a try? It's a fun tactical war game (if giant robots are your thing), the storyline is rich (but convoluted at the end) and the battles are fun. The starter set comes with enough parts to get started and the number of players can vary, although I don't recommend more than five or six unless you have referees helping run things. Three is certainly a comfortable game.

Some "solid" wargames that may or may not make the non-historical / freeform cut are:

Cobra
Totaler Krieg!
7 Ages
Normandy '44
and
World in Flames

Again, fantasy not modern, but Wizard Kings might hit the spot . . .

Any wargame dealing with the fall of Germany in WWII, 1945, could be played 3 player:

Western Allies

Yes. In fact, Battle for Germany has explicit rules for 3 players.

If you like naval warfare, Nine Navies War would be a good choice. Because the game is based around more-or-less random activation, you can split the navies up any way you wish. An easy way would be to do UK / Germany / Everybody Else.

Same with Onward, Christian Soldiers, if you're into crusade-era, somewhat abstract wargames. That one's easy to scale anywhere from 2 to 7 players.

is the best wargame for 3 I know. It is set 250 years ago, so not a winner on your chosen themes. 2 players work together to fight Frederick the Great, but only one of them can be the winner.

End the Triumvirate is a euro/wargame hybrid that is designed for 3. It's a lot of fun, and plays in about an hour or hour-and-a-half.

I agree - the ETO WWII is a 'natural' situation for 3 players and many games have explicit rules / victory conditions for 3.

Gustav Adolf the Great's Breitenfeld scenario is great for three players.

Let an amateur play the Saxons. The result can't be worse than historical.

i like warcraft the boardgame a lot. it is playable with 2, 3 and 4 players and its real fun with diffrent scenario`s and the expansion.

runebound is also great fun! with 2 or 3 players (never played it with more) but its not a wargame

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions it will take me a bit of time to filter though them all but certainly there will be something among them that will work for my group. And perhaps some other people can benifit from this thread as well.

I would like to add "Here I Stand - Wars of the Reformation 1517-1555".
An excellent game that plays well with three players.
It is not a complex game although a bit on the heavy side, but lots of stuff to do, asymmetrical winning conditions, and lots of negotiation.
Strongly recommend!
