What is your favorite style of beer/ale?

*I have homebrewed for years and I am very aware of the literally hundreds of styles of beer on this planet. I have stayed to the basic styles that were listed according to the late and great Michael Jackson (The beer guru, not the singer). If you feel a style was missing, sorry, I stuck with what MJ had.

If you like a German double dunkell you will simply have to find the category it best fits into (perhaps Pilsner (German style lager) or Oktoberfest or Bock). Afterwards feel free to post your exact favorite below. I did not inlclude "other" as a category. If you can't find a match, just post and we will celebrate the beverage with you.

Hoist a pint and good cheers to you.

Poll
What is your favorite style?
Pale Ale (IPA, American Pale Ale)
Red Ale (Mild Ales, Amber, Coppers, Mild Bitters)
Brown Ale (Nut Brown, Old Bruins)
Porter (may also include Dark Ales, Smoked Ales)
Stout (Imperial, Irish, Russian, Oatmeal on and on)
Barley Wine (Includes Scotch Ales, Strong Ales, Heavy Ales)
Belgian Ale (Witbier, Unfilterd Wheat, White Ales, Tripples)
Pilsner (German Style Lager)
American/Canadian-Style Lager (Not including Light Beer)
Oktoberfest (Marzens,)
Bock (Seasonal German style outside of Oktoberfest)
Lambic (Fruit Beers)
Light Lager/Pilsner (Your standard light American pilsner)

My favorites:

Anchor Steam
Grolsch
Almost all Belgian beer
Some Sam Adams

Also, most beer tastes better in Europe. It's not the same as the ones we get here. So, Carlsberg on tap in the middle east (where I first tasted it) is really good--the one here........yuk

This is a trick question. Better would be "which beer do you dislike" and then I could check "American-style."

I enjoy so many beers, from a Guinness, to a hoppy pale ale, to a Bamberg Rauchbier -- the variety is what makes beer wonderful.

American-Style + Best Hoppified Beer = Dogfishhead

The hoppier the better, though that can be tricky with the hops shortage and all.

Though IPAs have been my favorite for years, I have really favored double porters, Arrogant Bastard, and any beer in the 7-12% abv range lately.

Indeed... their 90 minute is one of the finest beers ever brewed. The 120-minute is also quite good if you let it sit in the fridge for at least a year.

That IPA is fantastic, the sticker price in not so good.

I am a hop head and I will tell you this secret. Michelob (spelling) came out with a Pale Ale this year that was outstanding (not Dogfishhead) but one of the most bitter IPAs I have had.

It was labled a Pale Ale and came with a blue lable. It can be found in their special adition variety pack. The Marzen they made was solid as well.

This thread might end up being really expensive for me. I'm really wanting a Schlenkerla Rauchbier, and it might just mean a trip to Germany.

Germany, home of both the best beers and board games.

Oh, it doesn't need to sit for a year...but it does only get better with time.

Another thing that will get Dog Fish lover's out there; I only live 30 min from the brewery and their restaurant. Every Wednesday they have a happy hour where they crack a fresh keg and run it through this:

Yes, that is Randall the Enamel Animal...and yes, it's beer being filtered though a Randall full of fresh hops.

I like IPAs. But I'm not as hop-crazy as some people; I like hops, but when there is too much, they drown out the other flavors and make the whole thing takes kind of like pine sap. Yuck.

My favorite beer is perhaps McMenamins Hammerhead. Some people make fun of McMenamins, but I think that's mostly because they are everywhere out here, so they're easy to knock. Not all their beers are great, but Hammerhead is a very nice pale ale-style beer with just the amount of hops.

Apparently not everywhere. I've never heard of it.

That's why I said "everywhere out here." There are about 60 of them, mostly in Western Oregon with a few in Washington. Not every one has a brewery, but many do.

The hierarchy of beer, from the best down, is:

(1) Free, cold beer
(2) Free beer
(3) Cold beer
(4) Beer.

My favourite beer used to be Upper Canada Dark, an ale made by a small, independent brewery here in Toronto. Then they got bought by Sleeman, who moved the operation into their main brewery, and killed off the UCD yeast. Now, UCD is really just Sleeman Dark.

My current favourite is Amsterdam Nut Brown... A dark ale made by another small, independent local brewery. Hoping they don't get bought out anytime soon...

I selected "Belgian Ales" as a catch-all for unfiltered wheat, but I was thinking Franziskaner. I tend to change my favorite by season, though.

In which I nerd out on beer...
For those with a love for deliciously-hopped beers, see if you can get your hands on a Pliny the Elder Double IPA from Russian River Brewing. As someone who is (somewhat reluctantly) becoming more accepting of aggressively-hopped beers, I'm pretty selective and I demand balance. This one delivers.

The American Amber-style tends more toward balance than the American-style IPA, so I'm enjoying more of them. Here in Seattle, Mac & Jack's African Amber and Hale's Ales' Red Menace are pretty good. Out East, I love Rock Art's White Tail Ale (not technically an amber, but similar in flavor and complexity to the ones I've listed. [/nerd]

One nice thing about living in Vermont is that we have some VERY good brewpubs here. The Vermont Pub and Brewery, American Flatbread, the Alchemist...the list goes on and on. It's opened me up to a whole new world of beer!

All of the above.

I like my local offerings, all brewing within a few minutes of my house and served at most restaurants and bars locally:

BBC (Raspberry Barleywine, Coffeehouse Porter and Holidale)
Opa Opa (Porter is one of the best Porters available)
People's Pint (Pied pIPA and ESB)
Paper City (Winter Palace Wee Heavy Scotch Ale, Holyoke Dam Ale)
ABC (Cascade IPA - very hoppy)
Northampton Brewery (Black Cat Stout, Maggie's Wee heavy)

Delirium Tremens
Young's Double Chocolate Stout
Xingu (Brazilian Black Beer)
Morimoto's Soba Ale

+1

I miss Michigan's microbrews. Washington is pretty disappointing in that regard. For everything else, though, I'll take Washington.

You are not too far from Portland Maine. Might be worth the trip to check out Novare Res. One of the best beer joints I've been to. http://www.novareresbiercafe.com
