For months I have been trying to get my non-gamer wife to play something, anything, with me. I had tries card games, board games, purchased games with characters or themes she enjoys, but with no luck. This evening I finally persuaded her somehow to sit for a game.

I have been playing a bit of chess lately, and researching 8x8 board abstracts. I stumbled across Creepy Freaks and wanted to give it a try. She agreed, which kind of surprised me with its rather juvenile theme, but I don’t think she really knew what to expect. Neither of us knew what we were doing, so the game took a bit longer than it should have. We did have a good time though, and when we were done she agreed to play another quick game.

I couldn’t think of a game that would be quicker then checkers, so, oddly enough, that was my recommendation - it upheld the 8x8 board theme anyway, if it needs justification. I’d estimate the last game of checkers I played happened late in Reagan’s presidency and, believe it or not, she needed a refresher on the mechanics of the game. "Move diagonally forward; try to jump my checkers" about summed up the tutorial.

We sat down to play. I controlled the black pieces; she took red. The game went as follows:

1. Fred West 22-18 Amber West 10-15
2. Fred West 23-19 Amber West 15-22

I began with a fairly strong lead, but left myself open a bit. I’ll have to say she did a very good job of exploiting my openings. The end game was a nightmare, for me anyway, with my 4 kings squaring off against her five kings and one un-promoted piece. She managed a surprise triple jump and my one remaining piece had no option but to move to a square where he could be taken.

She seemed to take delight in the game... and my sullen silence at the finish. I’ve tried to explain to her I let her win so she will agree to play more often, but she isn’t buying it.
