So I'd like to get RSS working properly, but in order to do that, I need to know exactly what is wrong. Can people post specific examples of where it isn't working right? I need to know the complete rss feed you are using, the rss reader you are using, and the problem you are encountering. Because some addresses for rss feeds have changed in the new system, make sure you are only sending links to rss feeds that are currently available on the site. Also, it would help to have a link to the page on which you found the rss link.

I'm looking for bugs only right now, places where things don't actually work. Please save your feature requests for later.

An example of my experience is also in that same thread. If you need anything more please let me know.

Edit:

here is a link to the page with the RSS (see Board Game Entry section mid right).

I add my own feed (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/user/ekted/rss) to Google Reader, and it never updates. If I click on it, then it updates, but it behaves as if they are all old posts. If I add BGG users who I have never watched before, they work normally. It's as if Google Reader is caching something about the feeds before BGG changed, and now it won't update them. Forum feeds do the same thing, but guild and wiki feeds still work fine.

Multiple versions of the URL might be part of the problem.

For example, the current game feed URLs point to:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/gamexml/32014

... but I have a number of game feed URLs that take this form after subscribing via Google Reader:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/item/rss/thing/32014

Threads are quoted incorrectly

http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/384785

I also have the same problems that ekted has. I've subscribed to hundreds of game feeds that don't update. If I click the feed, the posts are shown as 'read' when they should be 'unread'

After playing around with it a bit, it seems all the hidden posts in February were cached in some way - they all show up in Google Reader with a date/timestamp of February 27, 2009 11:39 AM (the current time). If I click through to the threads, I can see that they were posted throughout the month of February. So for some reason, when Google Reader does its automatic search for new info on the feed, it doesn't work. It only grabs the actual feed content when I click the name of the game.

Here's an example of the feed URL: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thing/7935

Note the "thing" text someone previously mentioned - I'm 99.9% sure that wasn't part of the URL when I originally subscribed to the game thread.

Here's another - a guild RSS that didn't update until I clicked it.

The only reason why I discovered it is because I exported my Google Reader subscriptions.

After discovering that a few BGG feeds seem to be updating correctly and others weren't, I exported the list and found the ones that worked all took the form:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/item/rss/thing/32014

The ones that didn't work all used this form:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/gamexml/32014

So I just did a search and replace and changed all of the gamexml ones to the form that worked, and re-imported it. Now they all work.

Of course, perhaps this is all due to caching?

UPDATE:

I see now. IF you go here:

http://validator.w3.org/feed/

... you'll see that while the feed validates, it does not use GUID.

Adding GUID might help with caching problems.

UPDATE 2:

After running the current RSS Feed URL format here:

http://web-sniffer.net/

... you'll see that the server is returning:

HTTP Status Code: HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently
Location: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/item/rss/thing/32014
Cache-Control: max-age=15552000
Expires: Wed, 26 Aug 2009 19:52:00 GMT

That might be a problem -- if the reader thinks the Cache-Control and Expires data above applies to the new Location.

I've made a change that might make your rss feeds for games start working again, but you'll have to manually sync at least once. I've made no changes to any of the other feeds yet, so they are probably still broken.

I don't grab any game feeds, so I'll let someone else give you feedback there. I grab user/guild/forum feeds...when you get there.

I may have found the source of the RSS updating bug. Let me know if your feeds start updating. you may have to update them manually first.

I added a guid field to the user feeds. I don't know that that will help, but I guess it couldn't hurt.

Overnight my post didn't show up. After refreshing, it comes right up. So nothing still. Interestingly, if I add users who I have never had before, everything works fine. Users whose feeds I've previously used are broken. So somehow Google is caching something that they shouldn't. Is there a way to embed something in the feed that says "reset cache" or whatever? Is this perhaps related to what Tim was talking about above?

Now Aldie's feed isn't updating for me automatically any more either. And it was new as of the testing of the latest feed changes.

Some of mine update, some don't. Manually refreshing sometimes helps, sometimes doesn't.

I have 2000+ feeds in Google Reader, including many forum threads. There's no way I'll be able to manually update all of them. Any possibility of a more automatic solution?

Once again, in order to test this, we'll need exact links that reliably do not work, and still don't work if they are added after my changes on March 4. Unfortunately, links that work if they are added today won't help us much, because we have no way of fixing the problem if we can't reproduce it.

We also have temporarily taken out our IP blocking, on the off chance that Google Reader is refreshing from an IP that is not registered to Google. If this solves the problem, let us know, so we can try to narrow down which IP we have to let through.

User feeds are working now. Guilds and forums seem to be pouring in as well. Whatever you changed seems to be working.

Well, since what we changes was to let in a whole lot of "bad" sites along with google reader, and we don't know which one was Google's, we are going to have to start reblocking one at a time. Tell us the instant anyone notices problems with the feeds again, so we can narrow down the problem.

Incidentally, I assume you are referring to a change in the last couple of hours, rather than in the last 5 days, right?

OK, I've put some of the blocking back in again. Let me know if feeds stop updating again. If there is no problem, I'll assume that none of the ones I'm blocking are google, and I'll add more to the block list. Eventually, I should hit one that is Google.
