I shouldn't have looked.

But I did. And I didn't like what I saw.

My 401k has shrunk to oh, I'd say about 201k size.

50% losses. Pshaw! Guess where Ms. Tao works?

That's a 2 year chart. From 55-ish to 1.60. And falling.

They're only losses if you cash them out now. Let them wait until the markets rebound and you'll be fine.

About a year ago my wife and I were just barely in the black. That is, if we cashed in our retirement plan and our daughters' college funds, we could pay off the last of the student loans and the mortgage with a little bit to spare.

I don't think that's the case any more, but I refuse to look. I figure, as long as I sit here with my fingers in my ears and shouting "LA LA LA, I CAN'T HEAR YOU," nobody can tell me that the last 10+ years of savings and work has been erased.

Thankfully I'm still young and many years from retirement. Although my 401K looks bleak now, I'm just looking at it as a big clearance sale and I'm cleaning up while things are cheap.

That's why I have been blowing every cent on booze and women. We're both broke but at least I've got memories...and a nagging itch...

This is from Oct 2008 and things have obviously gotten worse since then:

"If you had purchased £1000 of Northern Rock shares one year ago it would now be worth £4.95, with HBOS, earlier this week your £1000 would have been worth £16.50, £1000 invested in XL Leisure would now be worth less than £5, but if you bought £1000 worth of Tennents Lager one year ago, drank it all, then took the empty cans to an aluminium re-cycling plant, you would get £214. So based on the above statistics the best current investment advice is to drink heavily and re-cycle."

I just looked recently and was shocked to see a -41% return over the past two years. Sigh. But, hopefully, it will recover in twenty or so years when I want to retire...

Hopefully it will recover in forty or so years when you have enough savings to retire...
