I'm sitting down to my 'bagged' lunch of crock-pot split pea soup. Ham hocks, split peas, carrots, bay leaves. It's my all time favorite soup but looks like a bucket of movie prop equipment from the making of the Exorcist. Egads that looks awful but tastes so damn good?!

Anybody else have some favorite foods that taste great but look awful?

I once made some vanilla rice (using rice, vanilla extract, and Serrano peppers, among other things), and I thought it was going to be a disaster because it smelled TERRIBLE. I mean, this wasn't just the smell of boiled cabbage, this was something that smelled rank and foul. I gathered up enough courage to taste it, and was pleasantly surprised. I haven't made it since, then, because I doubt I could get my wife to get past the smell.

My favorite ethnic food is Ethiopian, but as a cat owner, the form factor can be unpleasantly evocative...

But it's so darn tasty that all aesthetic sins are forgiven once it hits the table.

Why does someone always beat me to the punch? (Or the kool-aid)

Except I call it Saag Paneer.

I like to quote the golden rule of Indian Food: The more disgusting it looks, the better it probably tastes.

Ha! I'm envisioning the cooks feading cats differently colored food the day before and then 'milking' them over the plates like piping icing onto cakes gulp

I'll bet it does taste really good though.

Odd thread. What is the assumed aesthetic paragon for food beauty here? Is it a natural form like the look of fresh fruit? Or perfection of surface like an egg? Or is it a more "architectural" form like a fancy dessert? Yeah, this stuff can look like feces, but I think I've eaten so damn much good food that looks like this that I just automatically associate these looks with something really yummy.

Saag = mustard leaf
Palek = spinach

They look almost the same but they are different recipes.

I make Palek Paneer all the time. I make my own paneer cheese, it is super easy. For the vegan, tofu that is pressed and then fried in oil with some bay leaf, pepper corn and tumeric is a good substitute for paneer.

You're trying to hard. When the thread title has the phrase "looks like crap" you can take your "aesthetic paragon" type language over to another thread

Sometimes I do forget that I am in Chit Chat. So what I should have said is:

Sugar Apples or Anon as we know them

Durian is disgusting. Stinky tofu smells like the sewage. I love stinky tofu, but cannot stand Durian. Some of the best food smells/tastes like crap.

I had a braised piece of beef short rib, the other day, at a very fancy restaurant, to which I took my wife for a special treat (also because we'd received a gift certificate from a friend), that was unbelievably tender (and juicy)...but tasted the way that feces smells (e.g. like crap).

There was sweet-potato puree underneath it that was out-of-this-world delicious, but my whole meal was ruined by my main course.

I could have sent it back, of course, but I was too 'out of my comfort zone' at this swanky establishment to have the kind of self-confidence that requires....*sigh*

This makes me think of the smell one experiences when driving past the Harris Ranch Beef Feedlot that sits next to I-5 halfway between SF and LA here in California. At 100,000 cattle and thousands "harvested" daily it is largest on the West Coast. Some have nicknamed it "Cowschwitz". I would describe the overwhelming aroma as the perfect amalgam of livestock, beef, leather, and cow shit all at once.
