Picked it up and loving it! It's surely going in a different direction than the other games, less scare and more action, but it's pulling it off pretty well so far.

RE5 got a relatively poor review from X-Play. I loved the crap out of RE4, but that was on the Wii where the control scheme is actually easier thanks to the point-and-shoot nature of the wiimote. Also heard that the AI for your partner is dumb as bricks.

But you can play co-op online.

I'm looking forward to picking it up, and although I'm sure that I'll like the game I was hoping for a more traditional survival horror like RE4 turned out to be. From what I've heard, this game is not nearly as spooky since you can play with another person through the whole thing, so I don't know if it will feel like a resident evil or not. I'll let you know after I actually play it.

That doesn't make the AI better. It only highlights how much it sucks if the solution is to replace it with a person.

I heard that the AI wasn't really stupid anyway. The one thing that it does poorly is that it uses ammo up a bit too quickly and can not be trusted to conserve herbs at all. Other than that, I've heard that it can fend for itself although I haven't played the game yet.

Who has a 360 or PS3 with a broadband connection and will play this game solo anyway? I'm sure that there are some people out there, but it seems like the game was built with co-op in mind. So you got the "solution" backwards. The solution for people without broadband is to replace the co-op with AI.

Also, shame on you for trying to hide the fact that you edit your posts. you should at least use the forum background color: "F4F4FF"

Well sure - when you take out resource conservation, which has always been a key to the RE games, then maybe the AI isn't stupid.

Forcing players to play a traditionally single-player game in co-op is pretty terrible, IMO. I have no interest in playing it with people I don't know. Maybe you have a higher tolerance. I don't.

And I don't care for the hassle of trying to synch my schedule to fit with friends that also happen to buy the game.

Some people like co-op. Fantastic. But don't force a player to use it if they want to enjoy a game.

Well, I can't really argue with you on those points. I was pretty bummed when I heard that they turned the game into a co-op and it kind of ruins the atmosphere. That being said, they're not forcing you to play co-op. In fact, if you don't play co-op it's probably a much more nerve-wracking (possibly annoying) experience because of the AI. Either way, I have a feeling that when they make number six they'll return to a single-player experience, possibly with co-op/multiplayer for some of the extra modes.

I don't want to play online or coop or anything else other than me and the game with a pizza in a dark room. I play board games when I want other people involved. So is this something I should not buy? I loved RE4. I rarely play video games and this was one I was considering.

Yeah...and that's my main concern. I don't have enough video game time to want to devote some to an annoying experience. The escort missions in RE4 were bad enough, I don't need an entire game of that, which is essentially what I'd be doing if I use the AI partner as nothing but a pack mule.

Hate to say it but RE5 is falling off my radar fast. Mad World just got bumped up to being next on my list to buy.

Interesting. I'm only buying RE5 because a friend wanted to coop, otherwise I wouldn't even bother with it.

Saw a quick look of Mad World at Giant Bomb. Stylish but utterly pointless. Violence for the sake of violence.

I also loved RE4 (on the wii) and I have really been looking forward to this game.

Now, mind you, I haven't played the game. But, from the reviews that I've read, it seems that this game feels quite a bit different from RE4. They say that it loses some of that edgy, nerve-wracking feeling that made RE4 really fun. For example, in co-op they implemented a Gears of War style revival system where if one player dies, the other player has a limited amount of time to get to their body and heal them. This, for me, is NOT Resident Evil.

Those same reviews said, however, that RE5 is a spectacular action game, so if you're into co-op action games, then this is where it's at. I might pick it up because I have some friends that I can play with. Also, I want to keep up with the story so that when they finally release another true RE game, I can know what the heck is going on.

Man, being forced to coop would suck. If the comp is using my resources and screwing me, that means a potential start over like RE: Code Veronica, and that would make me trade it in then and there.

3/5 is not poor at all. It's average.

As Morgan and Adam made a point on one of their episodes:

The use their whole system from 1-5 stars. 1 star is not worth buying, 2 is worth a rent, 3 will be worth playing and maybe buying, 4 is worth buying and 5 is a classic.

Granted, reading the review makes it clear that this game is really designed for coop, not single player, and that many control and game play innovations that would have been right at home in RE 5 are absent.

I meant relative to expectations. 3/5 isn't terrible for a random game, but it's not very good for an anticipated sequel to a beloved franchise coming off of a much acclaimed release five years ago.

Looking at giant bomb for anything wii related is your first mistake: I do not trust their impressions on anything Wii.

Not that they are very good on other consoles(they'd not know innovation if it hit them in the mouth), but the higher they rate a wii game, the more I'll dislike it.

Totally agree, they should have made a stellar game and done better; had to follow RE4 though.

Not like it was a review. They showed me 20 minutes of the game, a video that could've came from any venue. In actuality they had more positive things to say than I would've have cared to give.

Anyway, RE5 coop better be worth it, considering I've heard nothing but good things about it in almost every podcasts I listened to.

They moved away from that model with RE4. In RE1 - RE:CV, each bullet was gold and you had to make a decision with each zombie (Can I get past it easily? How many times will I need to walk through this hallway? I'm going to knife it a couple of times to save one bullet).

With RE4, it was one big action set-piece after another, and you were going to go through a ton of ammo. RE5 is moving in the same direction. It's RE4 refined.

The AI is as good as you can expect in 2009. Sheva gets in your way every once in a while, but in general, she's a badass.

Speaking of the action turn taken in Resident Evil 4 & 5, and in other modern horror games (Bioshock, Left 4 Dead, etc.), are there any genuinely creepy games out there for current generation consoles?

I know that's subjective, but I'm thinking here of games like the original Resident Evil, Fatal Frame, Silent Hill 1 & 2--games with a palpable sense of dread--or even of something like Eternal Darkness, that may not have been as outright scary, but which maintained a well-paced, creepy atmosphere throughout.

I'm all for some co-op in a Gears of War, or even in a B-horror setting like House of the Dead, but for me, nothing's come close to that "I'm trapped in a school with a bunch of inside-out dwarf/kid monsters with nothing but a flashlight, a pipe, and four rounds left in my pistol" for a long time.

The first thing that comes to mind is Dead Space. I haven't played it, but that sounds like what they were going for. You can get a demo and some animated comics for it on XBL.

And stay away from Alone in the Dark. Yee-Uck.

Dead Space wasn't scary once you learned the rules...the game never deviated from them so there was seldom anything unexpected once you were a few chapters in. It was gory, but not scary.

I can vouch for this. That game is all sorts of freaky. Although it is a third-person shooter. I would say that it's very similar to bioshock in style, except freakier. I also really liked the fact that the whole UI is built into the game. It does a lot to maintain the atmosphere of the game. Also, if you play it on hard you will get into the situation that you described above constantly.

Busting out co-op tonight for sure. Having good time with the 1p, but the ammo/health thing is freaking me out. In most RE games, 1 single 9mm bullet is worth it's weight in gold.
