Background story from the Rules:

As you open your eyes you notice the stench that comes from your side and jumping to the opposite wall you realize it is the rotten corpse of an unlucky adventurer. More and more a terrible headache reminds you of how you ended up there. You are a thief and the life of the thief was never easy. Business wasn't good and nobody bought hot stuff anymore since the Marschall Thereus was installed in his position. He rules the land with iron hand obeying only direct orders from the King himself. It is rumored that it was Thereus who made all the arrangements to depose Volgaran our previous King to install a marionette in his position. But you are not a politician so you pay only attention to pockets and shiny objects. It all happened a day you were close to starvation. Begging is not the thief's way and the guild restricted its aid only to the higher classes. You walked into a corridor behind the butcher's house when a man came from the shadows handing you a bag of food. The truth is you wouldn't have trusted him if it weren't because death was already on your side and anything that happened wouldn't be that bad. The figure introduced himself as Artemis Golereth a magician of the 7th grade. A very powerful sorcerer in fact. He said he was watching you for a while and that he has a job for you: He wants you to steal an amulet from another magician but requires somebody with talent. So he gave you the instructions, 5 gold pieces as an "advance payment" and a small amulet he said was going to give you courage. The job didn't sound difficult to do and you started to have hope in a new branch only the higher classes achieve: to steal for hire.

The mansion was on the other side of the city in a place called "Ravenroof". Two Moondogs were protecting the front of the mansion but the backyard was completely unguarded... strange thing to do, but you were in fact a little reckless sometimes and decided to move in and do the job as fast as possible. As you walk a small path in the backyard garden you felt a chill in your neck frozen your spine with a terrible fear. It took all your courage to walk through that invisible wall, and you realize the amulet that was given to you is indeed a magical medalion that somehow deflected the waves of the Fear Spell that was casted as a protection of the back door.

Inside you found out the magician was a man of a very good taste. Silk and gold and metals you have never seen radiated magic all over the place. It was the thief's dream, but you reminded yourself this was a paid job so you moved to complete your task. Advancing in the guild herarchy is never an easy thing to do, you needed to be very good and to have a lot of contacts. "This surely will be an improvement", you thought. As you walked in the desolate room you saw a small statute that had something strange in its eyes. As you approached it, you noticed its eyes moving towards you !! And a wave of terror invaded again your body paralizing you with a fear that wasn't natural or human. The statue was in fact a totem of fear that had the purpose of stopping anybody that wasn't invited to the room. Again your will prevails with the help of the amulet and you managed to break the statue into pieces breaking the spell that was cast on it.

The instructions were very specific so you moved room to room until you reached the one that was said to have a gargoyle on a side wall. As you stepped into, a mechanism activated and only your high reflexes allowed you to avoid the darts shot at you from a side on the wall. You started to understand why the guild is not fond on robbing magigians but you were glad your quest was about to finish. As you opened the second drawer of a small furniture you heard another mechanism activating but failed to see the origin of the trap. It was too late for you to understand the thin and invisible gas was pouring into the atmosphere and as you fell unconscious you hit your head against the ivory floor. Only a last glimpse let you see a man standing by your side smiling and saying: "another rat for my labyrinth, maybe this one will do a better job at keeping his body parts together".

You have been captured by the magician you were sent to rob that also happens to be the one that hired you.

As the memory fades you start to look around for a way to escape. Searching in a secret pocket you realize that whoever sent you there didn't took your few possessions and your pickpocketing tools are still intact. Also you find a dagger & a potion of some kind in the rotten corpse and wish you have more luck that the poor soul that wasn't even able to escape this room. The door seems to be a solid one but the keyhole is accessible to you and in less than a minute you open it showing your quality as a thief. Outside, dark corridors extend far in the distance and the thin light of some torches show you the path. Growls and screams of all kind filled your soul with fear, but there is no time to wait. You must escape the Dungeon of Terror.
