What's on top? The ones I've always had had baked mashed potatoes over the top, but that looks like biscuits..which would be good too!

Likely mashed potatoes with a layer of nummy cheesy goodness. At least mine has cheese in the potatoes.

I think the yellowiness is caused by an extra layer of butter on top of the mashed potatoes before it's broiled to make that yummy crisp layer on the top.

Sniff. My Ma used to make great shepard's pie. Once I got all the skull bits out, it was so delicious.

In Toronto, there's a major street called "Sheppard Ave." A company I was working for, several years ago on a co-op term, had, on their cafeteria menu one day, "Sheppard Pie". As we weren't that far from the street in question, I avoided the dish, just in case it was made of something scraped off Sheppard Ave.

Now, Shepherd's Pie, on the other hand... My wife makes a good one.

The Toronto Star recipes column has an easy, healthier version named after that street, that I like a lot: Traditional Sheppard's Pie with a difference. It's made with sweet potatoes and ground chicken (or turkey) and mixed frozen veggies.
