Battle Royale is indeed a great flick (for those who like that type of stuff, I imagine it might not be everyone's thing).

Suicide Club I've not heard of.

I did just watch the first Hanzo the Razor the other day. Yikes.

Suicide club is great, if you like mind-fuck type movies with social statements. Some knowledge of Japanese society maybe required for full viewing pleasure.

Japanese culture is just different. Without a lot of study and hard work its not easy for us to understand Asian cultures which are so very different to western cultures.

Battle Royale is great (although I don't think I really understand the ending)

A couple of years ago one of my friends told the rest of us about Battle Royale. For a long time we couldn't find the time to actually watch the movie, but we did have plenty of discussions about it. Best discussions ever, in fact. What if we were there? Who'd live, who'd go nuts, who could kill? This went on for months... zombie

An excellent movie, but please stay away from BR2.
You know what they say about sequels, this confirms it.
It could have been so much better and after seeing the first it trashs the story.

I must admit sometimes that such a school programe should be implemented.

BR2 was in my local cinema... but the reviews were so bad that I didn't go.

Most crazy sick asian movie I ever saw in the cinema: Ichi the Killer. You'll need an very strong stomach for this as it features extreme gore, torture, rape &c. &c.

Crazy asian movie that's really really really good: Oldboy.

When I was studying Japanese in college I read this essay entitled something like "The Japanese Imagination on Self Annihilation." It was really good. It focused on three movies in particular, Godzilla, Akira, and some other about Japan sinking into the ocean. It explains a lot of the symbolism in the movie--especially Akira, and compares them to some Western movies. I highly recommend it, though as far as I know you have to have access to JSTOR to get it.

Supposedly, the book is much better, and goes in depth into every student's background and psyche.

Japanese culture is very different from western culture, and before I knew much about it, most Japanese movies and books didn't make any sense to me. I don't see why you say that Japanese culture is so sick. You could say that about any culture.

The Japanese have this thing for tragic failure. I mean, all cultures respect the noble guy who won't sacrifice his principles and fights a losing fight to do so, but the Japanese go way beyond that. Consider Oda Nobunga, a major historical figure who failed to unify Japan. Or the 47 Ronin (who are revered for committing suicide in the name of vengeance).

All powerful figures, but not in the "George Washington" (or even "Patton") way. Their successes are all tainted, to an extent. That's ever the way in the real world, but we don't dwell on the failings of our ancestors who have moved from history into mythology. The Japanese seem to revel in them. At least, that's what this outsider sees.

Thanks for the warning. (and thanks to Abreu, too.) I enjoyed the first one but now won't waste time on the second.

BR was pretty good, and while I haven't read it the manga is at the very least well drawn.

Suicide Club, while interesting, I didn't enjoy as much. It does reveal the Japanese tendency to sometimes follow a story rather than a character, however.

Oldboy is overrated. Second best of the 'vengeance trilogy,' with Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance being the best. Oldboy is just a little too slow and back-loaded on story, although in other respects it is a very well-made movie.

Of course, I think I like the martial arts epics and comedies like 'Kung Fu Hustle' the best when it comes to Asian movies.

You haven't seen Oldboy? And you call yourself a geek? Have you caught the rest of his vengeance trilogy? How about Audition? Asian films are de riguer for geekery these days, have been for about two decades. Get with the program.

Somewhere between the opening credits and the ending credits there was a point when I realized that the movie really only had one interesting idea in it. That was the point that I got bored.
