Hi there,

Finally, after so many years and so many visits to other countries, I will finally visit the US of A :-) And more precisely : 2 weeks which I will spend going through California and Nevada... San Francisco, LA and Las Vegas are certainly some places I will attend but... I am always looking for more recommendations, more precisely: the following :

- any great places to grab something to eat / I love hamburgers so my arteries can certainly be clogged with the best ones out there Or seafood? Even anything else goes... And yes, I eat everything and have no preference whatsoever...
- as a rollercoaster addict, Six Flags is a place to be (especially after reading the reports on the El Toro) : any more out there?
- Death Valley and the Grand Canyon : got those too... Any more?

Anything goes so if you think there's stuff out there that needs visiting or if you have other suggestions: do let me know

thanks for any replies!

For burgers in LA, I would say. Apple Pan (one of a kind) and Islands (chain) for sit down, Tommy's Burgers (loacl chain) and Inn 'N Out (bigger chain) for fast food.

As for seafood, that's a pretty big spectrum. Do you want pricey seafood or cheap stuff like fish tacos? Do you want Japanese restaurant suggestions?

Thanks a lot Ralph for the great suggestions :-)
Why is it that I see the name Apple Pan appear on so many threads and other references? I have a book called Hamburger America and even the author states that it's unique and one of a kind. "Best burgers" even... So that's a definite yes for a visit Islands and Tommy's : never heard of but noted! My thanks!
Inn'n'Out : woah! And their secret menu ;-) Another that was on my list :-)

Coming back to the seafood part : as I live in Belgium, there's not much seafood to be eaten here > I was talking actually about the humongous heaps of crabs and other fine dwellers of the sea that are served. With a buttered cornstick I thought? Price is not an objection but it really doesn't have to be a fancy restaurant... People may say that enormous portions are ridiculous but I'll be the first one to laugh with their statements ;-)

Well, we have truly excellent Japanese restaurants over here (especially in Brussels) so thanks for the suggestion but that craving is weekly satisfied ;-) (sometimes even twice a week) The local Katumundon (rice / japanese omelet / onions and porkstrips : marvellous taste!) is unsurpassed / along with the many offerings of sushi and sashimi, maki and all that And oh yeah, I've already been to Japan when I was 19 (that's a looooooooong time ago) so I'll jump on the "American" and Spanish food-bandwagon those 2 weeks

Vegas casinos can be a good place to get good cheap food of many kinds. Like many places, California is over-fished, so it isn't really a good place to get seafood.

Six Flags for gees, Disneyland for pretty. Maybe someone will comment on Knotts--I haven't been in very long--it's near Disneyland.

Only a hundred or so, just in California! Death Valley: Check temperatures before going! Temperatures can exceed 55C! If you're going soon, you should be okay.

Other stuff: How long do you have? What's your general travel plan? What do you like? Forests? Mountains? Deserts? Coasts? For example, these are just north of San Francisco--100m tall:

Cancel or ignore connecting flights. Rent a convertible and drive! It'll be a couple thousand km, but worth it. (Always carry a few gallons of water and snacks going through the desert.) Gas prices right now are about US$0.60/liter (though we use gallons); it changes a lot, but it'll be lower than your prices, I think.

Well, seafood, there's a funny place called Joe's Crab Shack, not really worth it if there's a long wait though. They don't specialize in crab however, more fried fish and shrimp, but very large portions.

Another chain which is popular is called Red Lobster. It's not high quality but you will get very large portions, and all you can eat cheesey bread included. Both restaurants put pictures of the food on the menu so you know what it will look like.

If you want fresh fish you can try McCormick & Schmick's, also a chain. The prices will be higher (>$20 an entree) but the fish is brought in daily and the menu tells you where it's caught (like Alaska salmon, Hawaiian mahi mahi, Atlantic salmon or tuna, etc).

I've been to the Blue Mermaid Chowder House in San Francisco and thought the clam chowder and fish and chips were good.

We ate the fantastic whole Dungeness Crab in San Francisco in an outdoor stall at Fisherman's Wharf. They have some plastic tables/chairs under the overhang on the outside of the sit-down restaurants. Too incredible for words.

They also sell the clam chowder in a bread bowl--but you can get that most places. Be sure and buy the sour dough bread while you're there!
