Hey, Chit Chat, I've been thinking lately, and once the current economic troubles pass and job prospects start to look better, a move might be in order. It's just an idea I've been toying with.

Some of my current thoughts:

-Boston: I've got several old friends in the area, plus I like the city.

-Cleveland: I've got some family in the area. It'd be nice to live closer to family. I've been here a few times, and the area seems nice enough.

Places I don't want to live:
-Chicago: I lived in the suburbs already, and it was okay, but not great.
-Anywhere in Florida: It's Florida. Sorry, Mrs. Mystery Bob.

So, what places do you think are great to live?

Also, if you'd prefer I stayed the hell away from where you live, post that too.

Colorado and Texas both have high densities of geeks.

Or is that high-density geeks?

Fine. I'll mow my lawn. You don't have to move.

Jeez.

'bout time. Your lawn is devaluing the property value of the whole state.

Seattle or Portland I could do. I'm not so sure about San Diego. I'll jot those down.

I've been to Austin, and enjoyed it. Summers might be a bit too warm for my taste, but it's something to consider.

I interviewed for a job I didn't get in Claremont, CA. I would have moved there in a heartbeat.

If you are interested in Texas, Fort Worth is pretty nice and close to BGG CON. I did a geeklist about it here http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/31271 The only thing I don't like about it is the flatness of the terrain. Austin is better in that respect.

South Florida was an awesome place to live. I really miss the beach.

Aside from that, Austin is a nice place to live. It is probably the only place to live in Texas.

Have you actually been to Boston? Have you dealt with the people there? I would put a bullet in my brain by day 3.

These are the people who cursed out my 3-year-old niece for wearing a Jeter jersey.

The summers are intense here. Four months of 90+ degrees (I remember a 115 degree day) and no rain. Everything turns a thousand shades of yellow.

Once, but I didn't deal with people in any meaningful way, aside from people I was visiting. Hmm...something to consider.

It might be easier to grab a map and mark off where you don't want to live (Too hot, too cold, hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, been there, hated it, boring, no work) and see what general areas are left.

Depending on your line of work, your choices may be limited.

I've been happy in Portland for the last 18 years. I was only intending to stay here a year or two until I could move back East, but after a year or two I decided I liked it better here and I stayed.

I like Cleveland. It is easy-going, and what constitutes a traffic jam there is waiting for the red light to change. It has a small town feel with big city ammenities. All the times we visited it, including twice so far in 09, it was pleasant. If had to move back to a city, I would head there or Baltimore.

If you do not mind something out of the way, though, the Rogue Valley in Oregon is really nice. Especially, Ashland. Again, small town feel, but with lots of stuff to do. Great natural vistas within several minutes to a hour's drive.

Good luck in your search.

What do you like about Portland?

(I like it just fine but 6 months of rain takes some getting used to.)

So? Our new state slogan: "Texas, not for wimps."
