A few days ago I got a call from the car dealership where I purchased my car. Except for occasional mailings and a few automated phone calls about scheduling maintenance, I have had no contact from them since I purchased my car. So, keep in mind while reading the following that this is the first time they have called me in five years:

Him: Hi Mr S? (I don't know how to spell what he called me, but it sort of vaguely resembled my last name)

Me: Yes.

Him: My name is Toby Smith. I am the relationship manager here at BlahBlah Honda. (What is a relationship manager? Do I need one?)

Me: Ok

Him: Well, uh, I just called to, uh, wish you a happy birthday and I, uh, hope it's a great one.

Me: Thanks.

Him: So, how is that Accord working for you?

Me: It's fine?

Him: It says here that, uh, Bob Jones was the sales person who helped you purchase your Honda

Me: I guess. It's been five years.

Him: That's what it, uh, says in the records.

Me: If you say so.

Him: Well, uh, I just called to wish you a happy birthday and I, uh, hope it's a great one.

Me: Um, thanks?

Him: Well, uh, uh, have a good day.

Me: Bye

It was fine. We didn't do anything until a week later when we used it as an excuse for a games day.

If only I knew.

When I told my wife, she said, "Imagine having your whole job be spending all day making awkward phones to random people." No, thanks.

Why is that call disturbing?

Apparently the Honda dealer made the decision to augment their staff with a person who calls customers and asks a few simple questions to discern if they are still happy with their purchase. Had you said something indicating discontent with the vehicle, service department or another aspect of ownership the employee would have tried to get enough info to start a process to resolve your issues.

It's not a sales call, it's a customer service call... a "relationship" call if you will. The potential upside to calling every customer once or twice a year is huge and the downside is negative. Eventually you'll want another car (or need one)... if the Honda dealer goes out of it's way to ask touch base with you and help with any issues then the chances are good you'll at least consider shopping there again.

*game store*

I had a casual policy of contacting new gamers... particularly dad/son pairings who decided to get into Warhammer 40K or one of the various CCG systems and just ask them how the painting was going, if they needed any modeling tips or, if it was a CCG, to inform them of informal tournaments, new releases and freebies that many publishers made available. My list never had more than 20 or 30 people on it but each other staffer also maintained their own informal list.

We were game sellers, but we also built relationships.

Good on that dealer. Buy another Honda.

Pfah. That's the kind of bread I live of every day.

Let's take a random example.

Yesterday at 2am

Phone: *ring*
Me: Yes?
Phone: I would like to sell you some soap.
Me: At 2am? Tyler Durden, is that you?!
Phone: Yes!
Me: *hangs up*

Yes, it was at 2am. Yes, it happened. No, it's not a solitary event.

I get what they where trying to do. The effect however was creepy.

If what they wanted to do was establish a relationship, shouldn't they have stocked their caller with a few canned questions like "Is there any other service we can offer?" or "Are you looking for a new car?" or whatever.

Calling the wish me a happy birthday when they had never previously communicated with me just came across as really out there.

The saleswoman who sold me my Honda called me every few months to make sure everything was with the car. She called on my birthday and everything. When she left the dealership, she sent a letter to let me know that she leaving. Unfortunately, the person who replaced her did not continue the practice. However, the service staff who do maintenance on the car do remember me.

Crap! I forgot!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

I'd bet the caller was a new employee and not very skilled at the job. Based on your rendition of the call I'd have given him a fail and written a short script for him with 2 or 3 basic questions. Nothing creepy, just simple stuff like, "What are you wearing?" and maybe get a few account numbers from you.

BTW, Richard. Sorry about that call. A complete mix-up. It won't happen again. Well, at least not for a year. Oh, and happy birthday again.

We're just now getting around to celebrating my past few birthdays, but I think I'm got a pretty good deal: Multiple boardgames and a trip to a B&B in Santa Cruz. Breakfast in bed followed by board games in bed. Best. Birthday(s). Ever.

You should have asked where your present was.

"Thanks! What did you get me?"
