What is marked in red is New York City. What is not marked in red is the rest of New York State. More than 30% of the state's citizens live outside of New York City and its surrounding counties.

I'm getting really tired of telling people "I'm originally from New York State," (and I do emphasize "state") and they still think that I'm from New York City. I've even told people "I'm from Rochester, New York," and I still get questions about NYC.

New York City != New York State.

That is all. Thank you.

When I was in grad school first in Rochester and then in Syracuse, most of my classmates were foreign nationals who were vary confused / upset about where then ended up. They were expecting to be at/near the city since they had applied to a school in "New York"

My cousin lives in New York. Do you know him?

And one of my game group members just moved there -- perhaps you know him too?**

**Actually, you might know him -- he moved to Buffalo! Hey, it's closer!!

I don't live there anymore, so chances are about nil. Sorry. Also, Buffalo and Rochester are still an hour drive apart.

Wait a minute! That map makes the tiny slolom course that is Putnam County seem like it actually occupies space. You pass through Putnam in about ten minutes. 5 uphill, 5 down.

Many many years ago, I went to NYNY and DC. I was stood atop the ESB, well not atop, but in the viewing platform, at night. The whole city was a blaze of light for miles around. I talked with an American chappie, and asked him where he was from. Queens he said, pointing over the river. It was his first time up the building, despite living there all his life. Little did I know then that I would be looking at your house, twinkling in the night.

I have a prize winning photo I took of NYNY from the ESB.

Please also note that "New York" referred to the whole province (and by extension the state) 29 years before New Amsterdam was renamed New York City. So if you simply say "New York" I argue that you are referencing the state and not the city.

So yuk

For the past 20 years, I've just been telling people "I'm from New York" and let them interpret or clarify it as they see fit. If folks are going to assume I mean New York City, that's usually to my benefit.
