I played my first game of Settlers of Catan last night. I know, I know... that's like saying that I just got around to watching "Star Wars." As I played, I noticed quickly why it's such a staple of the hobby: many games since have derived certain mechanics from it. I recognized one, and am trying to place where I saw it.

Think about how when you're setting up SoC, the first player starts, you go clockwise, and then the last player sets up twice and you go counter-clockwise back to the first player.

I've seen that before! But I'm racking my brain to remember where... The game that has that mechanic is likely in my collection list, but isn't necessarily one that has a play logged on it.

What other games do something like this, either in setup or later in the game?

La Città has the exact same mechanism for the starting castles.

It's my impression that fantasy football drafts use something similar.

This system is used in first 3 (track building only) turns in some (all?) Mayfair Crayon Rail games.

Heroscape drafts work this way.

Starcraft setup is done in this manner as well.

Thanks for all the responses.

I have played StarCraft: The Board Game, but that was before I logged all my plays, and I don't have it on my wishlist... so I was thinking for a while that StarCraft: The Board Game was the game swimming in the back of my brain. In part, it might have been.

Now I think it might be Lifeboats that tickled my memory. The third phase of every round has a sort of "clockwise, then reverse" mechanic.

Odd, though, that I thought that I was remembering some game that was derivative of Settlers of Catan, but that Lifeboats came out first. Besides, I doubt even that Lifeboats invented the concept... if such a simple thing can even be said to have been "invented."

Thanks again.

This is a very common balancing mechanism for start.

Crayon Rails games (Empire Builder, Eurorails, etc) use this mechanism.

Twilight Imperium (Second Edition) uses the same mechanic for galaxy setup.
