This is a short tale of a small victory in my game design exploits.

I've been working on this one game for awhile. It's gone through several different iterations, but I feel it's now in its best form. With all the fuss about Artscow deals, I made a set of the cards using their designer and ordered them. Just got the cards on Friday. (They turned out great, by the way!)

So today I was playing the game in my work-place lunch room. A group of us employees always play games over the lunch break.

A random passer by, the type that usually ignores gaming activities, took notice and leaned over my shoulder.

"What are you guys playing?"

"A game I created."

"You created it?"

"Yeah, I've been working on it for a few years. I just got these cards custom made for about $11."

"Cool." He just watched for a minute more. "Can I buy it?"

I did a double take. "Excuse me?"

"Can I buy it?"

"No, this is the only one in existance."

"Oh. Well, if you're selling copies for around $20, I'll buy one."

"Can I buy it" is, in my mind, right up there with "Can we play it again?" as the best things a designer can hear.

Excellent! Are you planning to approach a game company with it?

Any chance of a general description of the game?

I do intend to approach a game company when I feel the game's a bit more ready. It needs more playtesting, including blind testing. Earlier in the game's life cycle it was turned down by a game company, but I feel their objections have been dealt with.

Sure.

The game is called Hook, Line, and Sinker. It's a card game of cons and swindles in which players attempt to create the best scam with the cards that they have. Once the majority of players have a completed scam, all players vote on which they like the best. The criteria of "best" is generally the most plausible, rational, and entertaining, but that is ultimately up to those voting.

Hook, Line, and Sinker might be described as a Why Did the Chicken...? and Nanofictionary dipped into your junk email folder, with all the nonsense and hilarity that entails.

If you can make them for $11 and sell them for $20, that's pretty good!

Agreed - though what you REALLY want to hear is "Can I publish it?"

Or even, "When's the expansion coming out?"

Especially if that's proceeded by, "Hi, I'm a bigwig at Hasbro..."

No, what you REALLY want to hear is, "I've played it a bunch of times, and I'm wondering if the Chapel might be too powerful?"

Once a distributor is involved, you're probably losing money at that rate!

Wait... someone asked you if they could buy it... and you told them "No"?

It's time to get ArtsCow to do another run for you. ;)

That was a thought that popped into my head...

How cool would it be, though, to tell people your game was already on its second "printing"?

Games with dragons, spaceships, and bears aren’t wargames. Call them conquest games or strategy games or crap but they aren’t wargames.
