I've just played with the new planets for the first time. It was a two player game and my opponent started on Ghenna station. I was last to place an order so I could cover the opponents orders on his planet. I did two builds and made a scourge(I was zerg) with the last build and did a mobilize attacking one of the ground areas and placing the scourge on the Strategic Area. The opponent could not remove my control of the strategic area on the planet before building a base on an other planet, build flying unit and attack the Strategic area. Meanwhile, I could execute every order on the planet as a special order, which is great when trying to take out someones home planet. I found it a really devastating strategy, but a very specialized.

Yes, strategic areas are quite valuable, and contribute (along with air-only conquest points) to making flying units of any tier much more useful.

I'm sure that ripped your opponent to shreds; I've never thought of exploiting that planet's limited airspace to gain long term control. Good job.

yep, but it's a basic problem in all cases where you are next to another player in a 2-player start. That early rush just gets all the nastier if there happens to be a gold area on his planet.
A scourge in R1 seems very specialised though, I would rather have expected a Queen...especially early game, their spawn broodlings can help really rip up someones defenses...and their cheaper to boot(so even if you don't find time or resources to research, thats one more zergling, or even one more hydra if you'd only lack the gas for it...)...but i guess if you DO expect a long-term battle(and not him leaving the planet to you after R1 while trying to get his exe up) then going for air units may be reasonable.
