Was this a marketing blunder to go into the annals of history? Or was this all part of a clever bait and switch plan by KFC? Was Oprah involved? Let's vote and talk.

Poll
On Tuesday of this week, Oprah Winfrey offered an online promotion for the KFC fast food chain. For a 24 hour period, individuals could go online and print out a coupon for a free 2-piece meal of KFC's new menu item, a grilled chicken recipie. This coupon would be honored for a 2 week period.

Response was tremendous, and demand was more than several KFC stores could handle. Redemptions were restricted to the first 100 redemptions per location, a clause not noted on the website nor on the coupons. Some locations were rushed by crowds of persons looking to redeem their coupons, only to be turned away empty-handed.

Today (Friday), the CEO of KFC announced that the promotion would be suspended. Coupon holders can go to KFC locations and obtain a certificate to mail in for a rain check coupon that would be redeemable at a later date.
What do you think of this promotion and resulting fiasco?

Well, I was a little bummed because I got my coupon in the newspaper, I didn't even know about the Oprah one. And i really did want to at least try the grilled chicken.

But, now I probably won't get around to it, I'm lazy that way.

But we're talking about it in a Crystal Pepsi sort of way. How successful are we giving it credit for?

Successful enough that even though we're mocking the "get a piece of chicken" part of it, we're still thinking "KFC". If this promotion didn't exist, and it wasn't spoken about here, the brand name wouldn't have entered my consciousness (or even subconsciousness) at all this week.

Remember, the goal of the promotion isn't to give away food. Promotions like this exist to (1) get people into the stores and buy OTHER products, (2) increase awareness of the new product, and (3) long-term, increase the mindshare of the brand throughout the marketspace. This promotion is a (debatable) failure on pt 1 (but they're going to honor the coupons at a later date...essentially getting people into the stores and doubling the length of the promotion with very little marketing effort). On pt 2, it's more successful than expected (again, we're talking about it here). And on pt 3, this is TREMENDOUSLY successful...more so than it would be if the stores had enough product to meet demand.

Well, yeah, I'm thinking "KFC" thanks to all the hoopla. I'm thinking how disgusting their food is.

You might be giving it more credit than it deserves. Yes, we're talking about KFC. And, for some, it brings the brand back into the public conscience. But I'm certainly not seeing it in a positive light, and I'm thinking about the brand as a comparison to better or more affordable products, such as El Pollo Loco (better quality) or Popeye's (cheaper before coupons).

I temped briefly for a little company in Chicago called Cliff & Buster's, they made macaroons. They were on Oprah's 'Favorite Things' holiday gift list, and it was nearly the death of them. The ovens couldn't handle the volume and one of them broke down, then the computer system couldn't handle the volume and it crashed, losing a few hundred orders. I was one of about 20 temps they brought in to field irate calls from customers whose orders never arrived. We all spent a lot of time discussing how terrifyingly powerful Oprah is. She tells people to buy something, THEY ALL BUY IT. She could've told us all to buy Fords and Chevys and saved the American auto industry before it got so desperate it needed to be bailed out. She could've told us all to buy homes we could actually afford at fixed loan rates and spared us the mortgage crisis. Instead, she plugs cookies and chicken and creates chaos and destruction. She needs to use her powers for good instead of evil.

Come to think about it, I've never seen Oprah, Osama bin Laden, and the Devil in the same place at the same time.

Coincidence?
