what are people's thoughts on using the optional 8 card hand?

i haven't tried it in pursuit, but tried it a few times in paths and found it took away some of the tension of managing your hand - it made it too easy to hold a card until the right time to play it....

I am playing a game of it with James (dellchilli) now. It does make it easier to hold cards. It also means you get through the decks slightly faster (although not if you are holding cards...) So its a slightly different game, but I don't think its any worse than the 7 card game. It does make sure you draw the entire Mobilisation deck in the first 2 turns, which prevents important cards being left at the bottom of the deck (Blockade for example).

I can barely imagine how frustrating playing Pursuit with a 7 card hand would be; I've never even tried it (since Paths was so much better with the 8-card hand).

Totally agree with you Paul..just way more fun with 8...and gives
each side at least a chance for the combinations

I concur. After doing PoG first with 7 cards and then with 8 cards, we never went back to 7. I'm getting to my first game of PuG and will use the 8 card rule.

EDIT: Now on my third game and still like the 8.

You owe it to yourself to try it with the 7-card hand first. It's good.

Both are good, I think. Not sure which I like most yet.

I have slightly reconsidered......

I think the best is to play with a 7 card hand in Mobilization

and then switch to 8-cards when at limited war status....

I have not tried this yet....but simply do not really like the 8 cards
when only 14 in the deck...

Really? One of the things I like most about the 8 card hand is getting through the whole Mobilisation Deck. Otherwise you get silly games where an important event for one side or the other just doesn't happen for ages (See; In Which the Royal Navy Cruises the Carribean, for an example).
