Unless otherwise specified, does enemy crew always consist of people the same race as the ship's registry, and evenly split across all 4 professions?

Are there enemy bots if not specified?

The enemy crew is of the same race as the ship's registry. Thus, no bots.

I don't split them evenly amongst the professions. Usually limit the scientists and pilots (unless fighters are involved) to two or less.

yes, you usually evenly split up the crew.

the reasons you would change the arrangement is to do a change up on your players. there are also MD modifiers that can change this too. sometimes you just need to throw a wrench into the mix to keep it fun.

stay well,

Don't forget this is your game. If you feel like putting your players through a mission (as well as doing the bookkeeping,) there is nothing preventing you from having a mercenary ship filled with a hodpodge crew of aliens from all expansions. (just be fair and don't lose track.)

However for ease of keeping track of things (or if you're playing it more in the vein of a board game and less RPG like), it's easier to say "This enemy of is a and has a bonus for "
