A few weeks ago, I announced bands that name songs after the band as a Thing That Annoys Me. Well, with the upcoming release of Wilco's album Wilco (the Album) featuring Wilco (the Song) -- yes, (the Album) and (the Song) are actually part of the album/song name -- I checked my iPod for songs I actually liked named after the band performing it. I found 4:

They Might Be Giants - "They Might Be Giants" - Catchy tune that takes a funny bounce, thus making it harder to catch. Still, you can't go wrong with the voiceover "to make the merry-go-round go faster, you'll need to hang on tight just to keep from being thrown to the wolves".

The Halo Benders - "Halo Bender" - There is no stranger combination of singers than Calvin Johnson and Doug Marsch.

Afrirampo - "Afrirampo" - If you ever wanted to hear two teenaged Japanese punk girls spaz the eff out, I highly recommend you check them out. This song and its video are both amazing if you can stomach it.

Icy Demons - "Icy Demons" - Weird rock experiment with hints of acid jazz that works rather well.

The classic one being "Bad Company".

My favorite pseudo-example: JKB's last recorded Godflesh song was "Jesu", which he used as the name for his next band.

Reminds me of Jets to Brazil whose first album was Orange Rhyming Dictionary. Their second album had a song called Orange Rhyming Dictionary. I guess he really liked the name.

What songs offend in this category? I think Bad Religion and Black Sabbath are both pretty good tunes, and those are the only ones I can think of right now.

Bad Company -- Bad Company (too slow for that one)

I could think of a few with the band in the title, but not the title:

In a Big Country -- Big Country
Dancing in Berlin -- Berlin
This is Radio Clash -- The Clash
Killer Queen -- Queen

Led Zeppelin's song 'Houses of the Holy' was recorded during the session for the album of the same name, but the song was pushed back to 'Physical Graffiti'

Belle & Sebastian have "Belle & Sebastian" on their "Dog On Wheels" EP. It's a nice little unpolished gem if you're a fan of the band's music.

Damn, I'd swear the album was named "Talk Talk," but I checked and you seem to be right. There goes my cred as an 80's historian.

It's ridiculously common in straightedge hardcore, though I hadn't really thought about it before.

Awesome bands with awesome songs that share the band's name: Youth of Today, Gorilla Biscuits, Minor Threat, Teen Idles, Shelter, Wide Awake, Committed, Face Value, Good Clean Fun, G.I., Vision, Walk Proud, What Happens Next?, Limp Wrist, Turning Point, Uniform Choice...

Less common on the punk rock side, but there's Dag Nasty, Gray Matter, Green Day, MDC, and Descendents, who also had a song named "All", which is what they changed their name to when they got a new singer.

So, on the punk/hardcore side of the world, s/t songs are common and frequently killer!

So what's the problem? For the most part these all seem like pretty good or at least above average songs by the artists in question. Which makes sense to me, because if you're going to name a song after yourself, I think you're far more likely to put some additional effort into it.
