Last night we tried a "variant" where instead of trading an item with a player when you are at the same location, you could trade information about a portal. The rule we used was one person could tell another one person about the identity of a portal. If you shared information you could not trade physical items. We looked at it like a time issue - there was time to talk to only one person about one portal, just like the rules allowing giving one person only one item during the trade phase.

We only had the opportunity to do it once and it didn't really effect the outcome of the game - the information shared was about a wall. Actually it may have helped anohter player planning. Anyways it was cool enough. There was a physical item that could have been exchanged so it was a tough choice to make.

We still lost as well.

At first, the variant felt like cheating (in fact we opted to stop it after the first "exchange of information") but the more we played the more it seemed to be within the spirit of the game.

I think we will use it until the game gets too easy. I look at it like it is between flipping over the tiles once once person discovers it and being completly silent about discovered tiles - a happy medium. (like two people meeting couldn't say "that space by the Church - its a portal!"?!?!?!)

What do you guys think?

We play our own variant called "flip the tile over and leave it that way so all can see it for the rest of the game".

We still lose, too. zombie

Sounds like a good thematic middle ground for those who don't find this game insanely hard.
