It's fun, it's healthy, it's good exercise. The kids will just love it. And we put a little sand inside to make the experience more pleasant.

You know, they say there was a man who jumped from the forty-FIFTH floor? But that's another story...

That was deep, but their cutoff was too early from about 1:25 on.

Years ago, when I was in supercomputers, I wrote a mandelbrot viewer that could do a few frames a second until you got pretty deep. It was fun. It couldn't go as deep as this example though - I used 32 bit math, so it would start getting blockiness after a while.

Many years ago when I was really into writing Mandelbrot (and other fractal) viewers for my Atari ST, generating an image often took the better part of a night. I'd start it up before going to bed, and next morning the image would be ready.

Heh, just dug up an image of a different mandelbrot program I wrote. It worked in the background, zoomed in or out randomly every few minutes and updated your wallpaper. Sadly, it doesn't work with "modern" Linux window managers (and by "modern" I mean gnome or KDE).

Noooo! Resist! Resist! I have got things to do! Really I Have. Please, don't suck back into the world of fractals.

Fractint. I used it a lot. Fun. But I moved on.

No, must not download Fractint.

Must. NOT! MUST! NOT!

Very cool. My son loves playing with these apps (fractint and whatever came with that James Glick book) and looking at these videos. I bought Mandelbrot's Fractal Geometry of Nature and have many other texts on symmetry in nature, physics & art, art in nature - like Ernst Haeckel's work. The math in Mandelbrot's book is way over my head, but it is amazing stuff.
