COMPETITION PROCESS

Each nomination was assigned an ID number. SIX GROUPS were randomly created, Groups A~E have 6 members each, Group F has 7.

The Group Stage will reduce the field of 37 down to 16.

Vote for what you feel is "the best" wargame map in each group.
(I don't give a **** how you define this. That's entirely up to you.)

* Maps have been kept anonymous to discourage game-based favoritism.

* Map sections have been carefully selected from images on BGG to showcase that map's details.

* Images of real maps were used in place of digital artwork whenever possible, as we all know things invariably look different on the table.

* Some games had only very poor images, in which case I visited the publisher's website... and found nothing. Do not complain if your favorite game is poorly represented - blame yourself for not submitting good pictures, or the publisher for inexplicably having no art available on their game page. (Most notably - Case Blue & Streets of Stalingrad)

The top 2 maps in each group after 7 days will automatically go into the final 16. (twelve maps total)

The 3rd and 4th place maps in each group will go into a special 3 day vote-off, from which the top 4 will fill out the final 4 spots in the quarterfinals.

Ties in all cases will be decided by coinflip.

From the quarterfinals onward, it will be head-to-head single elimination.

This has taken considerable time and effort. Tips will be much more gratefully received than complaints.

Let's begin!

BTW, I think it's a terrible idea to mix hex and area maps in the same groups.

I don't see why it matters. And looking at the results so far, it seems to neither help nor hinder the area maps. A classic point-to-point map is winning one group, while several area maps are losing in others.

We are all wargamers. Maps should not be segregated based on design mechanic. We should be able to say "this is a good map" and "this is clearly not" regardless.

If you still disagree, I'm curious as to the details...

I find it very strange that the number of voters for each poll is so variable.

Why did people only vote for Group A and then stop? surprise

Is there a reason the last group had 7 entries but all the other had only 6? Neat concept, I tried to look at each map based on how well I could see the various terrain and tried to imagine how the terrain in a hex would look with a wargame chit covering it.

Only that there were 37 nominations and I didn't want to leave one out. The groups were randomly sorted by the website linked in the first post. Being in Group F does slightly reduce one's chance of going through, but that's the luck of the draw!

Not a bad method...

Yeah, i'm having some difficult with this poll. I do believe there's a big difference between how a map looks and how a map plays.

It takes a very good mapmaker to make a playable AND beautiful map.

I'd wager that people are voting for their favorite GAME, regardless of the map quality. Why else is the (otherwise bland) map for Warriors of God winning its group?

Nice poll, I like the attempt at anonymity for the maps. It definitely probably took away some of my bias (although I can recognize most of the maps anyway).

Funny comments. It's all for fun anyway, right?

I agree with Scott. The groups make no sense and compound the subjective nature of determining which is "best". Not only do they mix between area, point-to-point, and hex, but they more importantly mix scales. Different scale maps require different amounts of detail based on game function. As someone mentioned, Warriors of God has a really bland picture because at the scale being portrayed, there was not much detail needed for the game. The entire map was mostly for aesthetics and is darn good. However, that does not give equal consideration to the rest of that group which dance around the spectrum. As Dan commented, it must be just for fun anyway...

I voted based upon the actual map, not the picture presented of the map.

Did you read the header? The groups were randomly selected and serve only as a vehicle to reduce the number of nominations down to 16, after which there will be 4 round single elimination tournament.

I agree, but I still fail to see how this somehow prevents someone from looking at 6 maps and conclusively deciding that X is better than the rest. Is it that hard to make a decision?

Maybe I'm just more decisive than the lot of you!

It doesn't prevent someone from deciding which of the samples they like better. Whether it is better for purposes of comparison, I stand by my statement...

Yes, I did, which is why I ended with, "As Dan commented, it must be just for fun anyway..."

Nice work Shad, There are some really nice maps out there and it is fun just to scan through all the maps. It is going to be tough to pick just one winner though.

Thank you!

I wholly agree. This group stuff is easy. The head-to-head will be the real tearjerker.

If one knows what map that actually IS, it's pretty funny that after 156 votes not one person has chosen it!

Heh. On the maps I recognize, the fact that there's no game title doesn't hide the identity a bit.

And on the maps I don't recognize, the fact that there's no game title means I look at the picture and think, "What is this game? What IS IT?!? I MUST KNOW!!!" robot

I've got nothing to tip Shad with, but kudos to him just for the effort he put into providing little slices of the maps!

Great poll Shad! Thanks for doing this.

And thanks for thinking ahead and defining that each individual is to decide the criteria as to what BEST means.

Keep up the great work buddy!

Oh, and I do hope once the entire thing is done you will come back and identify what each map is.

Interesting. I did not pick the most popular map a single time.

There are some very nice maps here. I hope we learn what games these are for; I will want to check some of them out.
