She survived cancer while trapped at the science outpost in the Antarctic 10 years ago. Truly a great spirit and nobody who read that story when she was treating herself will ever forget it. The cancer eventually returned but in the end you can say it never beat her.

RIP at the age of 57.

I remember reading this in 99 I think it was. I was like "Jesus, she can't leave because it's a wall of icy storms outside their front door." But ya, they got the airdrop and she was trained in such treatment and had the support of the community (that station is like a small semi-self-sufficient town).

I'm gonna track down that made for TV film about her soon.
