While a board consisting entirely of hexagons is apparently the easiest to program, in fact the game of Y can be played on any board with three "sides", where the cells always meet in threes. The inventors of Y refer to this as Mudcrack Y. I have scanned in a page of boards from their book Mudcrack Y and Poly Y to illustrate.
