We woke up and the sun was... sunny. The birds were singing and everything was... just so... ordinary.

You could tell it would be a day of no surprises and we indeed were not surprised. We boarded the Pay on Delivery and settled in. Even though our escort was late to join us... the bandits that did show up were only going through the motions. There were no attacks to speak of and the ones that did show up only buzzed along the flight's perimeter and then left again... perhaps a lot of aviation enthusiasts?

We hit the outskirts of Rouen and the weather was gorgeous, 17 degrees and not a cloud in the sky. The flak gunners were all off to tea and couldn't have knocked the fluff off of a dandelion. We dropped our payload on target and cleared just around 40% of the field.

As we hit the turnaround again the wave of... blah hit us. Don't get me wrong... a day of survival with no 'heart in mouth' moments was lovely. It's just it always leaves you wondering what the bloody hell the other boot is going to look like when it drops?!

The trip over the channel was lazy. One aircraft came in close enough for us to smell the garlic on the pilot's breath but our fairweather friends chased him off with nothing more than stern looks and a bit of harsh language.

We landed without incident and trooped back for debriefing. We survived the big leagues for now... but would our next mission be so accomodating?
