It's a lot more legitimate than most Origins Award winners. Zombie Fluxx last year? (especially over Race for the Galaxy)

Pandemic is better than Tomb winning....I can't believe Tomb was up for any award. Agricola is probably what many wanted but frankly that game has been out too long to be considered for this years awards (although I suppose you could say that about Pandemic).

Wow! Mouseguard (a children's RPG) beat out D&D 4th. That's pretty stunning, and a statement about how many people felt about D&D 4th...

(thank goodness Ninja vs. Ninja didn't beat pandemic...)

i wouldn't categorize Mouse Guard as only a children's RPG. Sure it is kid-friendly, but there is a lot of game there since it uses the Burning Wheel system (albeit slimmed down)

perhaps the award says more about how well people think about Mouse Guard and less about any distaste they have for d&d

While D&D 4.0 is a good game, and I think better than sprawling 3.5; Have you SEEN the Mouse Guard RPG?

It's a BEAUTIFUL book. I haven't seen such a wonderful little RPG book in a long time.

Too bad you already own it, then you could buy/trade for mine.

Nice to see Magic to be awarded yet again. People unjustly hate the game, but it continually brings quality to the table.

Honestly, I am not surprised about Magic. There were tons and tons of people playing Magic there. The game looks alive and well and there were plenty of vendor booths selling Magic products that were packed with people buying.

What it doesn't show is that how few people will be playing mouse guard in 2 years hence, and how many more people will be playing 4e. Love it or hate it, people are playing it. While it's an "interesting" and different selection, the emperor has no clothes.

So you're saying we won't be converting our 4e campaign to Mouse Guard?

You can only kill so many rats and bats before it get repetitive, but killing Orcs, that never gets old.

The Origins Awards are designed to recognize the "best" according to its rules and procedures and voting pool, not the most successful in the marketplace.

Will more people be playing 4E than Mouseguard in a couple years? Of course. More people will be playing [insert standard mass market board game title here] in a couple years than most, or all, of the highly rated board games on BGG. That doesn't necessarily make the mass market entry a better game. Quality and popularity can be connected, but are not necessarily linked.

Cheers,
Jim Lowder

But if it is about recognizing 'best'--it should be just that and not open to voting or vote-lobbying by companies during the show.

I think you'll find that there are different definitions of the word "best."

The number of people who like to play Accounts & Actuarial Tables are a very small portion of the population. The vast majority of people in the gaming community still prefer the social environment offered by the games that score low here on Geek.

Do they really "prefer" them?

I submit they simply just don't know better options exist.

Any award process that involves more than one person is, pretty much by definition, a voting process and thus open to the various forms of bias and vote-influencing that can entail. I'm not saying that the OAs cannot be criticized for their format, but that's pretty much true of all awards. Whether an award ends up reflecting your idea of "the best" really falls to how closely the award process and voting pool mirrors your own criteria for excellence.

Cheers,
Jim Lowder

Totally.

I can only expect that unjust backlash at 4ed held it back just enough to let the other one slip through. This has more the smell of protest vote than actual fair and honest results... but hey, that's what awards shows are all about. They haven't given an Oscar to a really good film in years, so why should anyone else feel challenged to do the right thing? OA is just as much an opportunity to send a message as any other review... so a message got sent. Will anyone hear it? I guess we're talking about it here, so that's something.
