Chris,

after reading through the ruleset that's been put up at the GMT website, i'm absolutely sure that i'll find it worth waiting for so long. Besides, i am happily willing to wait for a product that's been as thoroughly thought through as this one appears to be. Just look at the mess MMP left with their premature release of the new Panzerblitz game. Really a pity.

Eagerly waiting to open the box,
Jan

Chris reading the rules I've been impressed with your understanding of the history. It's pretty clear you've done your research. I have pretty high hopes for this.

OK, I'm in. Just placed my order. Why?

1. I've always liked naval games. As far back as 1971, my buddy and I played so much Midway that we made our own Coral Sea variant just to keep the experience fresh. Later played tons of Sixth Fleet, Task Force, etc. until the '90s, when I took a break from wargaming. Got back in a couple years ago when L2 re-did War at Sea. Then bought an old copy of Victory in the Pacific.

2. Never liked the complex ones where you had to roll for chaff, sighted torpedo wakes, sea state effect on gunnery, etc. I think naval games went to the "Advanced SWABBIE Leader" side for a while. Reading that PQ-17 was 4 of 10 on GMT's complexity scale and that it had the "sink me if you can find me" aspect of the oldies got me interested. ninja

3. The graphics look very good. I've seen a lot of wargame representations of the North Atlantic/Arctic and I like this one very much. Blocks - yes! (I'm a Commands & Colors - Ancients geek.) I like the use of several types of counters (sizes and shapes) for the immensely diverse force mixes. So what if the rulebook is B&W? I could care less. whistle

4. This looks like an innovative design. I've always thought someone should make a PLAYABLE game on that part of the naval war. U-boots, Russians, icebergs, Focke Wulf Condors, battleships hidden in fjords, 24 hour day or night, etc. Be still my beating heart! wow

Can't wait to get my copy!

I hope Stosser's enthusiasm is contagious! Afraid I have one disclaimer, though: GMT's complexity scale is somewhat elastic, and I have actually rated PQ-17 5 out of 10. Those of you who've read through the rules and/or EEoP are encouraged and welcome to offer your own opinions.

If you haven't seen the rules yet, a close-to-final version is available here on the Geek and I hope you'll take a look. Don't be intimidated by the 32-page length, as the rule book includes lots of examples, photos, an extensive index, and the odd design note or two.

I think I saw the "4" mentioned in a Wargamer interview. That was long before the game was close to publication. It is, in fact, rated "5" by GMT.

Hooray! I got charged today.

Too bad GMT isn't doing anything to promote PQ-17's intro at Pacificon/ConQuest/WCBGC/whatever over Labor Day in San Francisco. kiss

Probably not; however, you did re-input your credit card info right?

I wouldn't worry just yet. I haven't been charged for 1805yet, either, and I called GMT last week and confirmed they had my credit card info. I think the "bulk" charges like this take a while for the credit card processing center to input.

I live in New Zealand so it could be a bit longer, slow convoys take a long time to steam out here.

Looks like I was charged a couple a days ago.

Don't forget that they need a lot of people to log in and enter their credit card number again. May some of you guys need to do that.
