My own copy of Steam (pre-ordered during "Maryland Game Days" from Canton Games) arrived and it doesn't match either of the below counts, nor the rulebook.

It looks as though, its components are closer to those posted for MWTRTG, with a few more thrown in:

. A full-color, double-sided game board
. 136 double-sided track tiles (of 15 types)
. . . 85 Straight/curves, 50 complex/towns
. 8 "New City" tiles
. 240 wooden player tokens (in 10 colors)
. . . orange, green, natural, white, brown, black (as listed in the rules)
. . . red, yellow, blue, purple (unlisted)
. 120 wooden goods cubes (in 6 colors)
. . . 20 each red, yellow, blue, & purple; 24 gray; 16 black
. . . rulebook lists 16 gray
. . . a paper insert in the box mentions black are for future expansions
. 8 "New City" tiles
. 7 "Action" tiles
. 10 "City Growth" markers
. 68 gold, silver, & copper money tokens
. 1 wooden train turn marker
. 1 cloth goods bag
. A simple, full color rules booklet covering
both the basic and standard games [/q]

Has anybody else seen this or figured it out?

I don't know how to tell the difference in editions (other than the obvious "Face" box), but this Steam box, Prod #4551, has cardboard copper coins, which are depicted on its rear cover.

Not that I mind more bits...

In another thread:

Their web site says the special "face" version has:

Quote:
MWTRTG™ contains:
• A full-color, double-sided game board
• 136 double-sided track tiles
• 8 New City tiles
• 7 double-sided Action tiles
• 144 wooden player tokens (in 6 colors)
• 96 wooden goods cubes (in 5 colors)
• 10 City Growth markers
• 68 gold, silver & copper money tokens
• 1 wooden train turn marker
• 1 cloth goods bag
• A simple, full color rules booklet for
both the Base and Standard games

The listing for the "normal" Steam says:

Quote:
Steam Contains:
. A full-color, double-sided game board
. 130 double-sided track tiles (of 15 types)
. 8 "New City" tiles
. 24 wooden player tokens (in 6 colors)
. 96 wooden goods cubes (in 5 colors)
. 8 "New City" tiles
. 7 "Action" tiles
. 18 "City Growth" markers
. 52 gold and silver money tokens
. 1 turn marker
. 1 cloth goods bag
. A simple, full color rules booklet covering
both the basic and standard games

This fooled me. I figured I would be getting 6 times the player tokens, not realizing that the count for one is listed per player, not per total! The special version is supposed to have 5 more track tiles, but I doubt that.

The extra pieces are there because of a production problem with the company manufacturing the components. It is explained in this thread. There should also be a sheet of paper inside the box that explains why this first edition has all of the extra colors. Also, it indicates that the small black cubes will be used for future expansions.

There is, but it's not clear (other than the aforementioned black cubes).

Thanks for the link. Although, it does not address the disparity in the Hex tile count, nor City Growth markers (Rulebook & counter mix both agree on 10. Website says 10 for MWTRTG & 18 for Steam).

My guess would be that the (pre-release) info on Mayfair's website is simply wrong. The back of the Steam box is accurate, save the additional player pieces.

I think you are right. The Martin Wallace face game is really just Steam with a different box. Initiated as a lark, it ended up creating some confusion.

My MWTRTG copy has only 8 city growth markers (4 gray, 1 blue, 1 yellow, 1 red and 1 purple), so what colors are the ones i´m missing? Gray?

Those are town markers - the city growth markers are the tiny green ones... I think you're okay.

It's funny, but I wonder whether all this comedy will make MWTRTG a serious collector's item after all - obviously the box had ample history in the first place, but now look at the buzz! (Box problems, map damage, general brouhaha, confusion, missing bunnies, crossfire, comparisons w/ JBTRTG, etc.) People have sure heard about this special edition!

I had the extra black cubes, and extra player colors, but other than that all the counts matched what the rule book said.

Same here. I have no idea what the OP is trying to say.

Don't feel bad. There's a lot of game to go over here, particularly if you are new to the system. The terminology is somewhat confusing but after a few plays things clear up.

Yeah, me either.

After some investigation, the actual components of my copy seem to be nearly identical to those posted for the "Totally Renamed Train Game,"
with 4 additional sets of player discs,
16 additional black cubes for future expansions,
and 8 additional gray cubes for some yet-to-be disclosed reason.

Others have reported slightly differing load-outs, including:
3 to 5 sets of player pieces & up to 24 black cubes.
