Yesterday we played our third game of Dominion and we decided to pick random kingdom cards. This was the set that landed on our table:
Adventurer, Chancellor, Bureaucrat, Cellar, Council Room, Feast, Spy, Throne Room, Village and Woodcutter.

The three players: RioT - Djali - Tiberius

In the first part of the game it seemed that Djali would definitely win. Each turn she had 4 money to buy the Feast (to replace for a Duchy later) or either 5 to buy a Duchy. The pile emptied very quickly, as well as the kingdom cards. But her fortuned turned. She never reached more then 6 or 7 and wasn’t able to buy any Provence. The other two had assembled a better deck in the mean time and had nice opportunities. Especially RioT often had a good hand of cards (once reaching up to 10) and bought several Provences.
It seemed that every one of us had lost track of the victory points cards and none of us wanted to end the game. We kept playing, hoping and wishing for those Provences. But then RioT got self-assured when he suddenly had 3 Provence cards in his hand. He ended the game...cool

Djali’s deck:
5 x Estate
6 x Duchy
1 x Provence
4 x Village
1 x Cellar
2 x Spy
4 x Woodcutter
2 x Throne Room
1 x Council Room
2 x Bureaucrat
1 x Adventurer
(played 3 x Feast)

RioT’s deck:
9 x Estate
2 x Duchy
4 x Provence
4 x Village
4 x Cellar
1 x Spy
3 x Woodcutter
3 x Council Room
3 x Bureaucrat
2 x Adventurer
6 x Chancellor
(played 4 x Feast)

Tiberius’ deck:
7 x Estate
4 x Duchy
2 x Provence
2 x Village
3 x Cellar
1 x Spy
1 x Woodcutter
1 x Throne Room
1 x Council Room
2 x Bureaucrat
1 x Adventurer
(played 3 x Feast)

Score:
Djali 29
RioT 39
Tiberius 31

Our third game, and again a nice one. I can see this game being played by us over and over. It’s different every time, and you can play it differently each time as well.

We are new to this game, so any tips on valuable combinations of the above setup are welcome...

Good session report. I'm probably not a good person to give strategy advice as I've only had about 20 games and lost a fair chunk of those. A question and a comment though:

Why buy a Duchy in the early game? - surely with 5 money Council Room is a much better buy

Also my wife started consistently winning against me after about 3 games of Dominion. The reason: Unlike me she is less tempted by pretty pictures and cool effects.

In our second game the tendency grew to buy a Duchy rather often and the pile emptied quickly. This game the same happened. Already early in the game we saw the other buying a Duchy and followed to also have some before they're all gone! And indeed, the pile was gone even quicker then our previous game.
We'll have to try to play differently next time...

There is some psychological pressure to jump on a bandwagon like that for fear of missing out. But think of it this way: In a 3P game, there are 12 Duchies. If you let your opponents split all of them early, they'll have six each -- 18 points -- and six VP cards cluttering up their decks. In the meantime, while they're scrambling for 5 coins to snatch up the Duchies, you could be getting more coins and action cards to allow you to (a) pull more cards into your hand, (b) accumulate extra coins and buys, and ultmiately (c) buy Provinces. You need only 3 Provinces to match their 6 Duchies, and you'll have a much better chance of getting additional Provinces than they will, with their Duchy-clogged decks.

Yeah, one of the hardest skills to develop in this game is the discipline to stick to your plan when other players start turning the corner and buying VP cards. You may have the right strategy, but if you panic because your buying power hasn't hit it's crescendo at the right time you may ruin it by snagging a couple duchies you don't need.
