Would anyone who has made their own copy of Adv. Civilization kindly share their experience? (And perhaps photos?) I've seen some ready-to-print maps and excellent looking cards in BGG files, but I wonder how you'd go about printing them on a board. Also, how would you go about making the counters? I guess you could use some generic plastic tokens instead. (Or wooden cubes!)

I've assembled a set and learned a few things.

The map.
On mine I printed it out at work on a laser printer. I cut out the images, taped them together on the back then had Kinko's laminate it. If I wasn't so cheap I'd just pay to have them print the entire map out on a single sheet of paper and then have them laminate it. I may still do this but use a different copy of the map; I have 2 different versions. One is the entire w/ western the other is 2 pieces and scanned from the orginal.

Rules
Print them out. Not any big deal.

AST
Printed them out on the work color laser and spray glued them to some posterboard.

Player Cards
Printed them, spray glue them to posterboard

Tokens:
Here I got lucky. I have files to print them out but managed to find half of them on eBay unpunched. For the ones I had to print I bought a craft punch to cut them out and blued them to round wood bits. The ships I mounted to some double layer posterboard.

The cards:
This is the part I's like to do again. I used a photo program to print them out the trade cards double sided. Lets just say that they're not even..close but not perfect. I did the same with the civilization cards. I'd recommend using the files here and have Artscow or one of the other companies that prints custom cards do your decks.

It will not be cheap or quick to reproduce the game but considering the prices of replacement sets this is still cheaper.

If you want the files I have let me know.

I just re-read your post. If you wanted to go the cube route instead of printing tokens I'd suggest a trip to the local school supply store. You can get a jar with 1000 (maybe bigger) plastic cubes for around $15. They're in around a dozen colors.

Hello: We made our own Advanced Civ. Because we already had the basic Civilization, we didn't have to print the map or tokens. However, we've made counters/tokens in the past and it isn't that big of job. What you do is to print them out on plain paper and spray-glue them to thin card, then cut 'em out. We use a paper cuter. We publish a column in the Red Bluff Daily News called "Neighbors" and this week's column is about our making the game set. You can get to our blog (which is the same as the newspaper column) here http://ccloveneighbors.blogspot.com/.

We did want to make a Western Expansion Map but we need some software of some kind to divide it into page-size pieces to print. So far we haven't solved this. Actually, if anyone has some ideas on that, we would be glad to hear them.

If you have access to Adobe Acrobat or Nuance PDF Pro there's an option to tile the printout. It'll take a large image and break it into smaller bits for printing.

I have a copy of my redesigned Advanced Civilization cards on Artscow.com

They are full sized Poker cards... (not the same size as the originals).

Commodities set 1,2,3

Advances set 1-4
(the decks are very much alike exept for the extra commodity cards... just in case you have an "Evil Death Clawed Hand" player in you group)

They are at least 300 dpi in resolution and allow enough margin and "bleed" area.

Mine came out real nice. (You can see me with a fistfull in the gallery)

Don't forget to "play around" with the promo codes on ARTSCOW.com to get the best prices... because sometimes free shipping simply isn't good enough.

As for the map, I downloaded the one from the Advanced Civilization Expension Project... It's (was) openable in Illustrator so I was able to cut it downn to regular civilization proportion (with the western expension). It's all in vectors... I never printed it but printshop that do banners on paper or canvas will be able to do a good job for reasonalbe amount of money.

But all in all, it will cost more that 100$ to make a DIY game.
