On the Northeast USA map, the right-most blue city is simply labeled, "Maine."

What is this supposed to be? The City of Maine, New Hampshire?
I think not (but that'd certainly keep the postal clerks up at night)!

OR maybe it's signifying the Whole State of Maine? Except that...
Two hexes up is the town of Rumford, which is quite clearly in Maine.

Soooo, is this a misprint for, ...oh, I dunno, maybe, "Portland, Maine?"
It's approximately in that locale. shake

But then, I don't know much about geography...

Actually, the City of Maine is a real life hex approximately 1,000 square miles in size right about where that is on the Steam map.

Kinda like Ticket To Ride with Duluth and how Memphis is located in Texas on Domino's Pizza Boxes.

I am from Maine, and I believe the city should have been Portland, ME. Not really sure why they have the city as Maine. My guess is that it is a misprint.

I dislike the Canadiens. (The hockey team, that is, not people from Canada in general.)

Back in college, I'd tell people I was from Maine, and I was always surprised and disappointed by how many "What state is that in?" replies I got.

This prompted me to start asking people if they'd visited Maine. When they reply 'No', I'd say it's a shame, because it's terribly pretty, and they should really try to visit soon, before it reverts back to Canada in 2013. You know, because of the Treaty of Ghent, which ended the war of 1812 and gave us a 199-year lease on the territory of Maine. I myself don't mind so much because I'm now a resident of Florida, but my parents are worried. They don't want to move, but they don't want the hassle of applying for dual US-Canadian citizenship.

At least I amuse myself...

Cheers,
PP

Not a misprint. The hex is intended to represent all off-board shipments to Maine. There is no specific building (as there are buildings specific to each of the other city towns). It is the equivalent of the red hexes in an 18xx game.

There's still the question the OP raised about the city/town of Rumford, which is north of the Maine hex on the board. Isn't that in Maine as well?

Rumford isn't "off-board", QED.

I don't understand your post, could you explain? What is QED? Thanks in advance.

Morgan said it represents off-board shipments to Maine. Rumford is on the board, and hence not in the off-board part of Maine represented by the Maine hex. Quod Erat Demonstrandum.

I agree - it should probably have been labeled Portland, Maine.

There is a town called Maine in New York State - it looks to be about 10 miles NW of Binghamton.

That is not where Portland is on the map, nor would it have abstractly included Bangor.

This was a decision that Martin had made in his creation of the map.

So, the question has come up before (like, during playtest)? I can accept that it was a conscious decision, but the part that's really throwing me is the presence of "Rumford" on the map.

It's due north (& a tad to the west) of Portland--placing that corner of the Steam map squarely in Maine.

Unless, there's a similarly-named town in VT or upstate NY...

Amazingly Railways of the World and Ticket to Ride both put Duluth where St Paul ought to be.

It still would have made sense to call it Portland (or Bangor).

There are two elements playing into it, I guess. Historically, Rumford had Pennacook Falls going for it since day one ("day one" being 1800, with incorporation), and with development (agricultural and, taking advantage of the water resources, mills), it was certainly on the map as a city by the beginning of the railway age (which for our purposes we'll peg at 1825, with John Stevens tooling around NJ).

By 1825, Portland's established as a city as well (the capital, even, until Augusta yoinks the title in 1832). Granted, Maine was a semi-construct at this point; the state was established in 1820 with legitimate credentials, to be sure, but it was part of the balancing act that the Missouri Compromise dictated to keep the count of "free" and "slave" states equal.

But, more importantly, Portland's site is on the coast, and would probably be the next hex over to the southeast from the marked "Maine" city. I have no doubt that folks would have forgiven us for shifting Portland inland and to the west-aw hell, who am I kidding? You lovable lot would have had a Geeklist mocking us three weeks before release. Honestly, since the vast majority of rail traffic to the state would follow the coast, we had no problem taking the entry to Maine and calling it "Maine" to represent all of the traffic entering the state from along the coastline, even if most of it would end up in Portland, anyway...

So is "Binghampton" a printing error or is that a conscious decision by the designer, too?

It represents the Hamptons, because you otherwise can't go to Long Island.
