So, Zombies are a hot theme at present.

Was there a similarly hot theme before Zombies?

Any ideas about what might be hot next?

Pirates are a former hot theme. Anything fantasy/medieval is continually popular. I would try to avoid hot themes...that way you don't burn your fingers shake

This is not unlikely: Disney is working on Edgar Rice Burroughs' "John Carter of Mars," hoping it will be a big series like Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings. (The books have about ten volumes.) Mayfair seems to be more than its usual lackadaisical self in moving forward on Martian Rails.

I think what is hot for geeks, is not the same as what is hot for mainstream culture. There is plenty of overlap though. In fact, you might be able to say that geek culture is the incubator for themes to be picked up by the mainstream. At least it seems to be for the last decade or so.

Who can say what will be popular in the future? Maybe with the recession, finance games will take off since people will be more attentive to what happens to money?

Older themes-

Vampires

WWII games where the Nazis have super science and occult powers. Add mechs and genetically-altered Gorilla soldiers. (always hated this one)

Lovecraft

Mayans.

They are coming in back strong in 2012.

I've already designed a civilization game covering the empires in ancient America but since the world is coming to an end, why bother?

Yeah, there won't actually be a new hot theme as we'll all be one of the following:
(a)Dead
(b)Floating around in some giant boat (see the 2012 trailer)
(c)Living like caveman
Alternatively, 2012 could just mean the end of the boardgaming industry due to the recession, which would be worse than the end of the world. I doesn't bear thinking about...

Hopefully we'll see more off-the-wall themes like these (random list I just sat around and thought up):
Cowboys
The world of the small - Microbiology/Virology/Atomic structure
Insects
Time travel
Chemistry
Physics (who else would like a functional cardboard orrery as the centerpiece of a 2d orbit/spaceflight game?)
Disguise
Uncommon sports - Curling/Jaialai/Croquet/Badminton
Civil engineering
Renewable energy
Architecting/drawing house plans (especially if you can invent a new mechanism for this that didn't play like Tetris/Ubongo)
Traditional music notation/sheet music
Orchestra
Devolution a la the movie _Idiocracy_
Plant/animal breeding for traits with accurate gene mechanisms (Mendel: The Boardgame!)
_The Three Investigators_ kids' book series
Translating unknown languages
Secret codes/ciphers
Something like the movies _It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World_ and/or _Scavenger Hunt_
Magic Tricks
Pinball
etc.

Done to death:
Renaissance
Zombie/Ninja/Pirate/Robot/Vampire/Werewolf
Dinosaurs
WWII
Evil coming through a portal
Railroad
Egypt

For a light wargame with a moving planetary system, see "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century."

Re zombies, my theory is that they're the new Zulus; this view is colored by my years as a miniatures gamer. In recent years, there have been more zombie games than Zulu War games at HMGS-East miniatures cons.

Zombies allow present-day massed-hordes attacks without the stigma of colonial-era imperialism. There's no embarrassment in mowing down waves of zombies.

Of course, there always looms the spectre of the Justice for Zombies movement or the Zombie Anti-denegration Coalition (slogan: "Zombies were people too!").
