The other night I had to bid farewell to a good friend of mine, and excellent board game opponent, Smatt Read. Smatt managed the game store I worked at for a year before going back to Guinea with his partner, Annie, for nearly another year.

Some of you might be familiar with Smatt. He writes on the Gone Gaming blog with Gola, Tripp and a few others from here. He has also done puzzles for Knucklebones and Games Magazine.

Anyways, for the last few months after coming back from Guinea, he had been living in Helena. Now he is off to a month-long-shotgun-outdoor-survival-school before starting out on an attempt to hike around the entire boarder of Texas. He will be writing about the trip on his blog (http://texasperimeterhike.blogspot.com/) along with being published in several Texas papers--I think the Fort Worth paper is one of the bigger ones he will be in.

I wish him good luck and hope that none of you crazy Texans try shooting him! I also invite all of you to follow him on his blog with me.

Yes. He is from Corpus Christi--where he will start his hike from traveling counter clockwise around the state. He graduated from UT Austin too btw...

I always feel like I'm obligated to give out some sort of wisdom during these occasions, but who am I kidding.

Funny you should bring this up. It used to be that when friends moved away, I was heartbroken. These days with e-mail, cell phones, IM, texting and so on, it doesn't sting nearly as much as it used to.

I once had this co-worker who wouldn't leave me alone. When she resigned, she asked me if we would "really keep in touch and not just say we would". I responded honestly: "I usually don't keep up with old co-workers".

Cruel, yes, but it strikes me as funny to this day.

There were people I thought I'd never see again in college, but thanks to Facebook I've discovered that their lives are just as boring as mine, and we are all overweight and graying. The end.

I assume I'll never see anyone ever again, try to act like this will be my last interaction with them, and am pleased if I get an opportunity to see them again. If not, it's all good.

I'm not up to doing this for everyone, but I'm getting better. I recommend it!

I sure do hate it. That's why I only say goodbye to friends right before I kill them.

Yea, I know Smatt. What shotgun-outdoor-survival course is he taking? It sounds like fun.

This is me also. Co-workers are acquaintances, people I work with, not friends. Some people cannot seem to make that distinction.

All I know is that it is in Utah. There are no actual shotguns involved either I don't think.

I find that strange. I have many friends from places I work and have worked at--like Smatt!

Oh yeah, he might be. He said something about moving towards the colder weather...I have no idea what he was talking about.

Well, obviously I'm not saying you can't make friends at work. That happens all the time and has happened to me. I know I'm talking about co-workers that you have not formed a true friendship with and only see/socialize with at work or work funcitons.
