Dominion Day (Le Jour de la Confédération) was replaced by Canada Day (Fête du Canada) on October 27, 1982. That was the year the Constitution Act patriated the Canadian constitution and thus Dominion Day went bye-bye and Canada Day was born.

So perhaps it's just a longing for the "good old day" that makes them want to get behind a Dominion day.
