Discussion started in another thread (RIP Karl Malden), but worth breaking out before that one gets too far off topic...

...who, in your opinion, deserves the title of 'Most Overrated Actor'. For our purposes, this means a person who keeps getting starring role after starring role, is critically acclaimed, and, yet, doesn't actually have much acting capability.

Currently in the running:

Karl Malden (IMHO, not enough 'starring' roles to count)
John Wayne

Well, I know he has gotten starring roles (fewer lately than before), but I can't recall Keanu ever being critically acclaimed. I personally thought he was great in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, after that, not so much...

The problem I find with this question is that we aren't talking about BAD actors, but overrated ones. I just took a look at the Oscar winners for Leading Actor since 1980, including the nominees, and if I had to pick from that list the guys I think are overrated, I'm going to be picking guys that ARE good actors, without a doubt. No bad actors here, but maybe just not quite as amazing as some would have it. That being said, my top two overrated (i.e. good but not great, but not bad) actors would be:

Tom Hanks
Johnny Depp

See, now people are going to scream "whadda mean these guys are overrated!" but see, I'm not saying they're bad. I'm just saying that Tom Hanks plays Tom Hanks in most all of his movies, kind of like a modern day John Wayne - he doesn't really stretch, except perhaps in Forest Gump, and even then, he's really just playing a moronic Tom Hanks. Johnny Depp makes his living playing screwballs and caricatures of human beings, rather than real people, and I think it's easier to play an over-the-top loon like Willy Wonka than an ordinary person with ordinary emotions. But again, these are good actors and I like their films, I just think they get more critical acclaim than perhaps they deserve. Flame away!!!

pssst:

Gary Oldman is a hack.

The problem of course is that people don't like actors; they like movies stars. I wouldn't even suggest movie stars, because they aren't actors. When I think of actors, I think of people like Paul Giamatti, Sandra Oh, Catherine Keener, and Philip Seymour Hoffman, none of whom are on the A list.

I dunno, I'd put him on the "good" list. If only because watching him in 'Immortal Beloved', 'The Fifth Element', and 'Batman Begins'/'The Dark Knight', it's almost like watching three completely different people. Oh, and 'Dracula' (hell, I completely forgot that was him IN it - got that reference via check to IMDB). That, to me, indicates at least a halfway competent actor.

I dunno, Paul Giamatti is pretty popular. But Sandra Oh and Philip Seymour Hoffman?? REALLY?! Yikes! They always play the same characters?!

Jack Nicholson and Christopher Walken. Don't get me wrong, I love watching both of them, but there is very little acting there, I think.

I would have to say Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington.

As was said before, Ton Hanks plays the same role in every movie as does Denzel. Oh, I almost forgot Samuel "I wanna be in every movie this year" L. Jackson, it's not so much that he plays himself in every role (which he does) it's just that he takes you out of the movie because you just KNOW it's SLJ.

If you think that's true of Sandra Oh, go see Last Night or Long Life, Happiness and Prosperity, which I think are her best performances. She acts circles around others in Midnight at the Blue Iguana, too.

As for Hoffman, I'd say Truman Capote, Lester Bangs, Scotty J., and Father Flynn represent a pretty wide range of cahracters.

I think Tom Hanks was terrific in Philadelphia. For one. Find the right vehicle, and anybody can shine. Motion pictures are almost always a crappy way to judge anybody's acting talent. Hire them as escorts and that's a better indicator.

I think Colin Farrell is absolutely rubbish. Maybe he has improved but it seemed like he was totally incapable of sounding anything but Irish no matter what part he was playing.

Can you really say that Harrison Ford is an overrated actor? Don't you have to act to be overrated? If that's the case, vote for me. I spend my work time "acting" like myself too.

Jack Nicholson. Always plays himself. Sometimes he's a great fit (the Departed). Most of the time it's just another movie with Jack.

Pretty subjective... much like music really... but as a general rule of thumb the uglier the actor/actress the better the actor they are. There are rare exceptions but that's pretty solid.

Another vote for Jack Nicholson. Leering and chewing scenery isn't acting, although sometimes it jibes well with the film.

As brilliant as PF and SNL are, you think Walken's acting is "good"?
