I couldn't make this conference because I was doing field work, but I think the concept of 70 professional paleontologists taking a field trip to the Creation Museum in Kentucky is quite amusing:

From the NY Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/30/science/30muse.html

They don't look very happy.........

Brilliant!
(I look like that too when surrounded by the works of loons or at the ballet and "impenetrable art" gallery.)
Pity they took the "sullen protester" and not the "Raze the Bastille" approach.
Though these things can get out of hand.

I think the museum needs to add a planetary science gallery showcasing all the different kinds of cheese the moon is made of.

Paleontologists know a lot of stuff I don't. But I know not to wear socks with sandals. I have trips to Utah to thank for that. Thanks, Utah, for teaching us (everywhere else) how not to dress.

And also how you should leave some room between your thighs if you are a man crossing your legs. I think that's why they look uncomfortable in that place.

I'm guessing that the guy with the sandal/ sock combo is the one Brit in the group, in which case it's perfectly fine as this is the official attire of Brit academics (along with leather elbow patches). I think it's a tradition that has its roots in the Tudor Reformation.

According to the tradition, PhD's have to wear non-patterned socks, whilst Proffessors and above have to wear patterened (preferably Argyle) socks. Not a lot of people know that.

"Dr. Sato likened the museum to an amusement park. “I enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed Disneyland,” she said.

Did she enjoy Disneyland?

“Not very much,” she said."

Wouldn't you love to hear the conversation between the palentologists and the curators of the museum?

"See we have spent our lives studying the fossil records and have come to our conclusions based on the physical evidence that they contain to come to our conclusions. What exactly did you use to come to your conclusion for creationism?"

"Well, we found this book in a hotel room left by some guy named Gideon and it sounded pretty accurate."

*sigh* The Creation Museum is another reason to visit Kentucky. I posted a few weeks ago that a middle "science" class from a Christian school near Indianapolis, Indiana made a field trip there. The young people quoted in the article said it confirmed their belief in the literal translation of the Bible.

I hope for the sake of these men that you exaggerated... I pity them if this is how they look when they're "storming" someplace.

So is this some kind of Bishop Ussher place?

They don't look very happy.........

No doubt they're pondering the likelihood of whether the Creationist Museum is putting them on with its life-size replica of a dinosaur with a riding saddle OR whether 1981's "Caveman" movie with its depiction of ex-Beatle-turned-actor Ringo Starr riding a dinosaur was a more legitimate speculative prehistoric docudrama than that year's "Quest For Fire" after all. laugh
