Help me decide on what wargames to get. I only have two stipulations on them:

1) They must still be in print (or still available from sources other than ebay)

2) No futuristic themes.

Other than that, go wild and help me spend my uncle's money!

If you're just getting into war games, you might try some like:

Commands & Colors: Ancients
Hold the Line
Manoeuvre (I think it's being reprinted)

If you've played 'em for a while, I'd go for Napoleon's Triumph as it's unlike any I've played before...

That's a pretty wide open field you've left... If you like the ancient world, then you must get:

Deluxe SPQR (part of an entire tactical system called "The Great Battles of History."

Carthage (part of a system that is operational in nature called "The Ancient World series).

Or for a less advanced game but still in the classical world, get "Command and Colors Ancients." (part of a system, with many expansions available, that is also tactical in nature).

Regardless (I"m sure you'll get lots of good advice), enjoy the fun that is wargaming!

Good Gaming~! Mick

Twilight Struggle is still available, although sold out at GMT.
EastFront II is an amazing game of WWII on the eastern front. Can be linked with WestFront II and EuroFront II to simulate the ETO.
Combat Commander: Europe and all the supplements, or Combat Commander: Pacific.
Unhappy King Charles! is also a brilliant game.

I highly recommend Hold the Line and snagging a copy of Napoleon's Triumph before it is gone. You may not play it right away, but you can play it and Bonaparte at Marengo if you print out the B@M map.

In the wonderful game, Bonaparte at Marengo, this is how to get nasty Frenchies out of a village.

A lot of great suggestions. I'll have to third the recommendation for Napoleon's Triumph in particular, though. It's unlike just about any other wargame, and an extraordinary game to boot.

Is Friedrich still in print? That's another excellent one.

If, and only if, you can find someone to teach you, Star Fleet Battles.

Edit: D'oh! Two seconds after reading it, I forgot the "no futuristic themes." shake

ASLSK#2 here for $25

Don't forget, all the ASL Starter Kits are playable alone. You don't need 1 to play 2, etc. Pick up 2 now, and 1 when it comes out.

Just a wide-open suggestion, if I had no other board war games (so precluding miniatures) and wanted to start a collection from scratch based only on in-print games...

The Great Battles of Alexander: Deluxe Edition
The game which I think really kicked the "ancient revival" into gear, and the deluxe version is improved with many additional and interesting scenarios to boot. Be aware more of a historical interest, games are quite playable but balance is not necessarily a factor here.

SPQR (Deluxe Edition)
Maybe even better than GBoA, and I would say perhaps a little more intricate. Tons of scenarios and competing competent tactical systems, if sometimes the leadership on one or the other side is less inspired.

The Rise of the Roman Republic
But be aware you will need the online GMT "living rules". The originals as printed are with apologies to Mr Berg simply not developed worth squat. Much is corrected in the living rules and what isn't, well the incredible game is worth working through it, and it certainly can be done.

Carthage: The First Punic War
Not crazy about the stupid boring naval stuff (the way it is done in the rules, not the relevance historically) myself but overlooking that the scenarios are good ones and it does a good job continuing the story of the history from volume I.

Ancient Battles Deluxe
Ancient Battles Deluxe Expansion Kit 1: Elephants at War
Ancient Battles Deluxe Expansion Kit 2: Hell's Horsemen
Ancient Battles Deluxe Expansion Kit 3: Strange Ordnance
Ancient Battles Deluxe Expansion Kit 4: The Art of War
I am amazed to realize this collection has now exceeded the huge number of scenarios from the original I/II combined set. Personally I prefer the original Ancients graphics, and for that matter I am still partial to PRESTAGS as a game system except for the horrible way the maps were used, but this I admit is pretty good for a very quick and easy game with limitless replay and DYO potential.

Another absolutely premier tactical series, covering a different era...

This Accursed Civil War

Sweden Fights On

Under the Lily Banners

Gustav Adolf the Great: With God and Victorious Arms

Print copies may be running out by now on a couple of the older Musket & Pike Battle Series titles (and maybe Deluxe GBoA?) from GMT, but if so they are not long past anyway and I think one can still find them in stores if not online directly from the publisher.

And one can always obtain OoP games in trade or in the marketplace on BGG, as well as on e-bay.
