I have noticed since the release of The Hell of Stalingrad that players develop their own brutal tactics depending to win the game depending on which side they are playing.

So the question is: What are the best strategies you have discovered to Win at the Hell of Stalingrad?

If you're Russian, slowly pick off all the generals, then the Germans can't use 1/3 of their deck. Russians have lots of snipers. Do this first thing in a battle. And the German player will only be able to play one or two general cards.

If you're Russian, make the Germans discard cards constantly so they can never plan their strategies effectively.

If you're German, take down all the Russian heroes, particularly the ones that steal dice, to even the odds. This is a higher priority than winning the current battle.

If you're German and you're fighting in a well defended area, focus on nothing but infernos. They will roll-over to the next battle and possibly give you the edge you need.

If you're German, always target motivator chits to keep Russians from playing good cards.

If you think you have the edge going into the battle, take hold actions and end it immediately.

As either side, if you can unsupply troops just before the battle ends you can make it so they can't cover all the fronts any more.

No argument with your strategies but I jusrt want to check my understanding of the rules. On Page 16 of the rulebook regarding the Hero Major Effect: Steal 1 Break Test Die, The rules say that "The effect takes place even if a hero is killed and removed from play." Using a sniper shot to kill that hero doesn't get the German back the break test die in the battle in which the Hero is killed. So the kill is made to keep the hero from going to the discard pile to be recycled in a later battle.

thanks for any clarification you can offer.

Cheers,

Greg

That's correct.

After couple of plays i have discovered some tips and tricks in addition to Brian's strategies:
If you're Russian, slowly pick off all the generals, then the Germans can't use 1/3 of their deck. Russians have lots of snipers. Do this first thing in a battle. And the German player will only be able to play one or two general cards.
Yes this is useful, but when Germans have Seydlitz in command they will faster replace dead leaders. And then sniping is not that useful
If you're Russian, make the Germans discard cards constantly so they can never plan their strategies effectively.
Yes - Commando units are very useful, especially when German player has two or three cards in hand - it is very likely that he will be forced to take Reload Hand Action which gives to us one action round without his reaction.
If you're German, take down all the Russian heroes, particularly the ones that steal dice, to even the odds. This is a higher priority than winning the current battle.
This is hard way, that Germans have less sniping cards. Hold Action sometimes will be helpful but taking down Russian Heroes is very difficult. much easy is when you play Soviets to take German heroes, and that is some tip to Russian Player
If you're German and you're fighting in a well defended area, focus on nothing but infernos. They will roll-over to the next battle and possibly give you the edge you need.
Yes Infernos are very important but important is to build up your strenght in building with shielded units. Soviets did n't have too much armor units and that is way to get another dice.
If you're German, always target motivator chits to keep Russians from playing good cards.
Generally order to kill units is that: shielded units, motivator chits, recon units, rifle units. There is large possibility that Soviets takes out the latter to use some of their battle cards.
If you think you have the edge going into the battle, take hold actions and end it immediately.
This is most important thing - catch a day, catch a building. Situation in battle is flowing, catching right moment to end battle is very important.

What I have seen as the Russian player is that making the German lose cards is a major key to victory. German combos are ugly. If you can keep those combos from coming out, then you will have an easier time. Snipers are great at this because they can kill a general (hopefully a veteran one to add insult to injury) and make your opponent lose his cards.
