Technical difficulties resulted in the loss of the header. But here's the poll, once more.

Poll
We all see the weekly listing of some prominent Geekster. But what about the rest of the BGG membership?
16. 1. Have you been selected a Geek of the Week?
Yes
No
17. 2. If you answered No to #1, above, do you expect to be selected a Geek of the Week...
  Yes No
by GotW #300?
by GotW #400?
by GotW #500?
after GotW #500?
ever?
18. 2a. If you answered Yes to #1, above, do you think you will be selected Geek of the Week again?
Yes
No
Isn't that against the rules?
19. 3. Do you think you're worthy of becoming a Geek of the Week?
Hells yeah! I've made numerous, significant contributions to this site.
I'd like to think I've made some impression on others here.
I'm around here enough, and people recognize my screen name and/or avatar.
Meh. Take it or leave it.
Probably not; I try not to make too many waves here.
Unlikely, since I've burnt many bridges and have pissed off others.
No, I don't really make big contributions here.
Nope, I'm a lurker.
Other (please comment).
20. 4. What do you think of the Geek of the Week program?
An honor to be recognized by fellow gamers.
Something nice to be considered.
No great shakes.
A temporary ego boost for nothing in particular.
A silly honorific passed around by some good ol' boys online.
No opinion.
Other (please comment).

I think GoTW probably denotes you having a GeekBadge or an Uber. The way I've been abel to collect GG, I'll have one of those in oh... 2016.

At 200 recipients it's time for someone to do some datamining...

How about:

- world map showing "path" of the award, city by city
- diagram showing "path" of the award religion by religion
- demographics versus those of (active) BGG at large (gender, age, etc.)
- game weight analysis - are party gamers hogging the award?
- award winner thread net thumb trends

Not me though, some other fool... I've got Russia to invade this afternoon. devil

Eventually they'll run out of other users to nominate and then they'll give it to me an inanimate carbon rod.

Re: [POLL] The Geek of the Week and You
Sometimes I see the GOTW is someone I recognize as a great contributor or inspiration -- a designer, or session report writer, or gg philanthropist; sometimes it seems like it's passed between friends.

It's not a program that interests me. I'm merely noting that sometimes I think "wow, that is truly deserved!" and other times it's "who?".

Re: [POLL] The Geek of the Week and You
There's also a point of diminishing returns...

There is a finite number of people who deserve to be honored as outlined in the award's framework. Eventually, the that number is met.

Has it already been met?
Will it be met soon?
Will the steady influx of new users produce enough super contributors to see that it is never met? (unlikely)

Is GotW #XX as significant as #XXX?

I smell a Congressional hearing in the offing...

I have an avatar, been here since year 1, most people recognize my name and avatar, and I even am recognized by a few from r.g.b.

yet I have failed to get nominated so far, and I seriously doubt it will happen anytime soon.

I'm just not "popular" enough, I guess.
maybe I should spend more time in chit chat

I would trade a truckload of "industry" nominations like the SdJ or CSR just to be honored as Geek of the Week.

Re: [POLL] The Geek of the Week and You
I said "Other" for the question "Am I worth of becoming GotW" because I don't think it's an indication of worth. Not in any way. It's just mostly a lottery. A GotW thinks of someone whose contributions they happen to enjoy and that's who becomes GotW+1 (assuming you pass it around continents, a new requirement, and that you not know the person personally, a long-standing requirement). In my case, that was Mr. Cranky. Does that mean that he, or I, or anyone else who has been GotW was "worthy?" Hell, no.

"Worthiness" is not something you can really toss around in game forum. There are plenty of GotWs who are worthy humans and plenty who are unworthy, whatever that means. There are plenty who have contributed positively to this site and others who have, well, maybe not contributed as much as many non-GotWs.

It's a lottery. Worthiness has little to do with it.

Re: [POLL] The Geek of the Week and You
My understanding of the program is that it is not an "honor" that is bestowed upon some super-special "deserving" individual. Instead it is a tool to learn more about the members of the community. If it was some kind of fancy award wouldn't it come with more than a sparkly microbadge? If it was a prize for someone who made valuable contributions wouldn't more of the admins (who keep this site running and manage the content on it) be selected?

It seems pretty self-explanatory. Does there need to be a "reason" to it?

Spoken like two individuals who have a much better understanding about what Geek of the Week is all about.

As best I can tell it's not about nomination or any sort of recognition. It's just a token that's passed on for some arbitrary reason that is difficult to predict. At that point it's really not an issue of deserving it, it's just an issue of stumbling across it.

Nope, take it from me, that doesn't necessarily help either! Chit Chat is a great thing, but it's no yellow brick road to GOTW!

Actually, I think what it may take to become a GOTW (if that is a desired goal) is a single minded focus on one area or activity (such as creating player aids, reviews, geeklists, images, organizing game groups, running cons, or so forth) to the degree that someone becomes widely recognized for that thing. It helps to be highly prolific in whatever area of focus one chooses. Someone who does a little bit over a wide range of areas (i.e. a jack of all trades) is less likely to get noticed, it seems.
