Listen, I’m looking for a game which doesn’t place players in the same position. You know, whenever I buy a game, every player starts with exactly the same stuff, players pursue the same goal, to eventually learn who, considering the same starting position, did best. I’m looking for a different game. A game with different goals for different players, or with different starting points, I don’t know, something that would make me feel that each person at the table implements a different tactic. What would you recommend?

THIS is what you were looking for:
Space Hulk

These are excellent articles!

As an amateur game designer (who on this website isn't?) I find it absolutely fascinating to get into the heads of other designers during the process.

I can't help but say, again, about the time track thing... Space Hulk.

Sorry to beat that dead horse.

Keep the articles coming!

Sweet stuff. Game keeps sounding better and better. Entry No. 11 is particularly enlightening, not only providing a deeper view of the game but also insights into the designer's attitude toward the testing/development process.

It can't come soon enough.

I donno. Poland of course has had more than its fair share of legendary unwinnable defenses, but ... I've also played plenty of games where things are mostly "unwinnable", but every now and then the defender gets fantastically lucky and actually lives. War of the Ring does this really nicely, for example, where the Free People Military Victory is exceedingly rare, but the threat of it has to be taken seriously.
